Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the table’s subject and notes that the 16–20 age group has the highest figure, which is a relevant main feature. However, the overview is too vague to summarise the data accurately: “lower number was recorded for others” does not explain the general pattern or distinguish the remaining age groups. No figures or male–female comparisons are reported, and the claim does not specify that the peak is 19 hours for males and 18 for females. The response also falls well short of the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, report the main trends and several accurate comparisons, including the decline after ages 16–20 and the small differences between sexes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first sentence introduces the table, followed by an overview signalled with “As an overview”. This gives the reader a simple starting point, but the response ends before it develops into a clear summary with supporting details. The phrase “while lower number was recorded for others” does not establish a precise relationship among the age groups, and there is no progression from an overview to comparisons. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for the introduction, overview and key details, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast the 16–20 group with the older groups and then compare male and female figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “average hours”, “internet” and “age groups”, so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary is limited and some combinations are unnatural or imprecise. “The table chart” combines two alternatives, while “the data has been calibrated into numbers” does not clearly describe what the table presents. “Highest age” is also not an accurate way to refer to the group with the greatest number of hours. Build a more precise range for describing tables and comparisons, such as “the table presents”, “recorded the highest average”, “declined with age” and “the figures were similar”. This would make the summary clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response contains a few simple sentence patterns, and the intended meaning is generally recoverable. However, grammatical control is uneven even in these short sentences. The second sentence begins “the data” with a lowercase letter, and “As an overview, what stands out is that highest age 16-20” is missing a grammatical subject or noun phrase after “that”; for example, it could say that the 16–20 age group recorded the highest figures. In “while lower number was recorded”, the singular count noun also needs an article. There is little variety in sentence structure. Practise complete clauses, articles and accurate subject–verb patterns, then use them to form comparisons between the table’s figures.
