IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table illustrates how European people of six age groups consisting 11-15,16-20, 21-25, 26-30, 31-50 and over 51years old spent typically on the internet and it also shows comparison between men and women.
Overall, men spent more time than female counterpart behind the screen and it is visible for the most of the age groups except for above 30 years old men. Additionaly, both male and female at the age of 16-20 spent more hours than other age groups.
It can be seen that, male spent 8 hours on average on the internet during 11-15years old while the female spent 2 hours less (6 hours) than male. Next, the significant hours spent by both gender is between the age 16 to 20 years where men had 19 hours and women had 18 hours screen time. At the age of 26-30, both male and female had same amount of time behind the screen (4 hours).
The decrease of hours for men spending on the internet started from the age of 31 where they had spent 3 hours typically and female had an hour extra marking it to 4 hours and the trend can be seen among people above 51 years as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main pattern: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds for both sexes, then is generally lower in older groups. It also reports several accurate comparisons, including 8 versus 6 hours for ages 11–15, 19 versus 18 for ages 16–20, and equal figures of 4 hours at ages 26–30. The overview is useful, but it says men spend more in most groups without clearly stating the exceptions: women are higher in both the 31–50 and 51+ groups. The final sentence mentions this pattern but does not give the 51+ figures, and the 21–25 group is omitted. More complete coverage of these comparisons and a sharper overview would make the summary more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting details. The information generally progresses from younger groups to older ones, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Next,” and “At the age of” help guide the reader. This organisation is coherent, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “the trend can be seen among people above 51 years as well” does not specify the figures or explicitly explain that women again exceed men. The overview and final paragraph also repeat the age-related pattern without fully connecting the comparisons. Grouping the figures into a clear peak, subsequent decline, and older-age exceptions would strengthen progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the table, with relevant terms such as “average,” “comparison,” “decrease,” and “screen time.” The writer also attempts varied expressions, including “behind the screen” and “marking it to 4 hours,” but these are not natural collocations for reporting internet-use data. “Spent typically on the internet” is also awkward, and “female counterpart” is less suitable than a straightforward reference to women. Spelling errors such as “Additionaly” and inconsistent forms such as “internet”/“Internet” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional data-reporting language and check spelling; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural while preserving the clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “while the female spent 2 hours less.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “six age groups consisting 11-15” is missing a preposition, and “men spent more time than female counterpart” has problems with article and number. In “male spent 8 hours … during 11-15years old,” the subject and age expression are not formed accurately. There are also punctuation and spacing issues around age ranges. Review articles, plural agreement, and sentence patterns for describing age groups, while retaining the useful variety of structures already attempted.
