Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table indicates the information about the average hours spent on the internet by European males and females of different age groups. There are three columns in the table; representing age, males and females ratio of spending average hours on the internet. The first age group is from 11-15 years, males spend 8 average hours while females spend 6 average hours on the internet. The second age group range is from 16-20 years, the internet usage by males is 19 hours and females is 18 hours. Next, the age from 21-25 years shows that males spend 7 average hours while females spend just 5 hours. Similarly, the age group of 26-30 years indicates that males and females both spend 4 average hours on the internet. Consequently, the age group from 31-50 years, the male average hours ratio is decreased in comparison to feamles. Furthermore, the people who are older than 51 years, the males spend 2 hours and females spend 3 hours.

Thus, this table illustrates that the younger generation of European countries is spending more time on internet. And the males are surpassing females in internet usage. While the elder generation is spending less time as their average hours have been decreasing. Another interesting aspect is that the elder female generation is spending more time on internent in comparison to males.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You report the figures for all six age groups accurately, including the peak for 16–20-year-olds and the equal values for men and women aged 26–30. Your closing summary also identifies the broad decline in usage among older groups and the higher figures for women in the oldest groups. However, the overview is somewhat imprecise: “the younger generation” is broad, and the claim that males surpass females needs qualification because women record higher averages at ages 31–50 and 51+. The 31–50 figures are not stated directly, and “the male average hours ratio is decreased” is unclear. State the key patterns clearly, including the peak and the exceptions, to make the main features more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows a generally understandable order: it moves through the age groups and then gives an overall summary. Sequencing words such as “Next,” “Similarly,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the data. However, the first paragraph reads largely as a list of individual figures, and the overview is placed at the end rather than being clearly separated near the beginning. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated transitions between age groups, while “Thus” and “While” do not connect the final ideas smoothly. Grouping the younger and older age bands into separate paragraphs, then presenting a concise overview first, would create clearer progression and make comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “age group,” “average hours,” and “internet usage,” so the subject remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “indicates” and “surpassing.” However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “females ratio of spending average hours,” “male average hours ratio,” and “spend 8 average hours” do not express the data idiomatically. Repetition of “spend” and “average hours” also limits flexibility, and spelling errors such as “feamles” and “internent” reduce accuracy. Use standard collocations such as “spent an average of eight hours online” and vary reporting verbs carefully to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the numerical comparisons can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in sentence construction and clause linking. For example, “There are three columns in the table; representing…” uses an incorrect semicolon before a participle, while “Thus, this table illustrates… And the males…” creates an awkward sentence break. The phrase “the male average hours ratio is decreased” also has an unclear structure, and “the younger generation … is spending” does not agree naturally with the plural meaning of “generation” as used here. Aim for complete, well-formed sentences and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when combining clauses.
