Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table illustrates information about the average hours spent on the internet by male and female from the European community.

Overall, it is evident that the male from the teenagers group was mostly involved in the usage of internet. However, the people from elder group used it in the least ratio.

In the beginning, the male children belongs to the age group 11 to 15 are more involved in the comparsion of the female. However, the teenagers age from the group 16 to 20 in which male are mostly involved in the social media apps, while the average percentage for the female are 18. Moreover, the people from 21 to 25 in which male are more dominant as compared to the female.

In contrast, the male or female belong to the 26 to 30 ages are equally involved in the internet usage. Additionally, the elder people from the group community 31 to onward are least involved.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main pattern that the 16–20 group has the highest Internet use and that older people use it least, and you mention several age-group comparisons. However, the report is only a partial summary: it gives just one exact figure (18 for females aged 16–20), omits most key values, and does not clearly compare the overall male and female figures across the table. The claim that teenagers used “social media apps” is not supported by the table, which reports Internet hours only. The final age groups are also described vaguely rather than reporting the 31–50 and 51+ figures. The response is 145 words, five short of the required minimum; develop the overview and comparisons with accurate data to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs covering younger and older age groups. This gives the reader some organisation, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In contrast” signal relationships between points. However, progression within the body paragraphs is not consistently clear. Several sentences begin with “In which” or “However” without forming a complete, well-connected idea, and the final sentence groups the 31–50 and 51+ categories together without distinguishing their figures. Repeated contrast markers also feel mechanical. Organise the data in a clearer sequence, such as highest to lowest use, and use linking words only where the relationship is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “average hours,” “age group,” “equally involved,” and “least involved,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a table. “Usage of internet” and “in the least ratio” do not express the comparisons naturally, while “mostly involved” and “dominant” suggest participation rather than time spent online. “Social media apps” is an unsupported and overly specific interpretation of Internet use. There are also spelling errors such as “comparsion.” Aim for precise reporting language and collocations, for example “spent the most time online,” “the lowest figure,” and “compared with.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, the range is limited, and complex sentence attempts are often faulty. For example, “the male children belongs to the age group 11 to 15 are more involved” combines incompatible sentence structures and has subject–verb disagreement. “The teenagers age from the group 16 to 20 in which male are mostly involved” is also incomplete, and “the male or female belong to the 26 to 30 ages are equally involved” has errors in agreement and clause structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “the male” and “the female.” Practise complete comparative sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, such as “Males aged 11–15 spent more time online than females.”
