IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given table compares the usage of Internet in two genders by the European.
Overall, teenagers from 16-20 years old spent most of there time on the Internet and young male usage was relatively higher compared to the young female.
Regarding the first three age groups, it is evident that Internet was mostly used by the teenageres from 16-20 with 19 hours for male and 18 hours for female. The two other groups both shared the same pattern was that male usage was slightly higher than female.
Take a closer look at adults age group, older people tended to use Internet less than the youth. In 26-30 age group, equal level of screen time can be seen from the table with an average of 4 hours surfing the Internet. From middle-aged people and so forth female spent a little more time surfing the Internet with just 1 hours of differences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures (19 hours for males and 18 for females), and usage generally declines among older groups. You also note the equal figures for ages 26–30 and the female lead in the two oldest categories. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the key comparisons. However, the overview’s claim that male use is higher among “the young” is too broad: it is true for the first three groups, but not for ages 31–50 or 51+. The description of the first three groups is also somewhat unclear, and the final comparison would be stronger if it specified the figures of 3 versus 4 and 2 versus 3 hours. More precise coverage would make the main features better developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping younger and older age ranges. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Regarding” and “Take a closer look” signal movement between sections. The progression is generally logical, but some links and references are imprecise. For example, “The two other groups both shared the same pattern” does not clearly identify the 11–15 and 21–25 groups, while “From middle-aged people and so forth” is an awkward transition to the final categories. The paragraphing is appropriate, but more direct linking and clearer references to age groups would make cohesion less dependent on formulaic phrases and improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “usage,” “average,” “age group,” and “screen time,” and the reader can understand the comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably unnatural or imprecise, such as “usage of Internet in two genders,” “by the European,” and “spent most of there time.” “Surfing the Internet” is understandable but repeated, and “young male usage” is not a natural way to describe the figures. Spelling errors in “teenageres” and “there” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard report language and vary precise terms such as “hours online,” “Internet use,” and “recorded.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Overall…” and the clause beginning “In 26–30 age group…,” so the response is not limited to short, basic sentences. The main comparisons are usually understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur: “teenagers from 16-20 years old” has an awkward age construction, “The two other groups both shared the same pattern was that…” is not a complete, well-formed structure, and “female spent” lacks appropriate plural agreement. There are also article and number issues in “In 26-30 age group” and “just 1 hours of differences.” These errors do not prevent the reader from following the main message, but more accurate sentence construction and agreement are needed for stronger control.
