IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the information about the average hours spent on the internet by the European individuals of various age groups.
Overall, the teenagers of aged 16-20 recorded the highest number of hours while the 51+ years of age group people are the least users of internet.
On average 8 hours spend by the males and 6 hours spend by the females aged 11-15. These figures are very similar to the age bracket of 21-25 respectively. However, the highest number of hours spend by the individuals are aged between 16-20, account for 19 hours by the men and 18 hours by the women.
Age group of 26-30 as well as 31-50 represent quite similar figures but here male group of 31-50 spend one hour less than the female. Lastly, older people who are above 51 spend roughly 2 to 3 hours a day. Here higher number goes to the female side again. These figures suggest that higher numebr of internet consumers are childrens and teenagers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group has the highest figures for both sexes, while people aged 51+ have the lowest, and you include relevant comparisons across the age groups. The figures you report for 11–15 and 16–20 are correct, and you note the female advantage among older groups. This meets the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, the overview’s claim that children and teenagers are the main internet consumers is broad: the 21–25 group also records relatively high use, and the table gives no basis for calling the figures daily. Develop the comparisons more precisely, especially the equal figures for ages 26–30 and the small differences in the 31–50 and 51+ groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a brief overview, and then details moving through the age groups. Sequencing expressions such as “However” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the report, and the main comparisons are generally easy to locate. Cohesion is not always smooth, though. “These figures are very similar to the age bracket of 21–25 respectively” is unclear about which figures are being compared, and “Age group of 26–30 as well as 31–50” introduces two categories without clearly separating their data. Use more explicit links and references—for example, state each age group’s male and female figures together—so the progression feels less list-like and comparisons are unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “average hours,” “age bracket,” “recorded,” and “figures,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language. However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “European individuals,” “least users of internet,” and “higher number goes to the female side.” “Spend” is also repeated, and “numebr” is misspelled. These issues make the wording less natural and precise, although they do not prevent understanding. Aim for accurate collocations and concise descriptions of data, using terms such as “hours spent online,” “lowest usage,” and “women recorded slightly higher figures.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a concluding sentence beginning “These figures suggest.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the teenagers of aged 16-20” has an incorrect construction, while “8 hours spend by the males” omits the required passive verb form. In “the highest number of hours spend by the individuals are aged,” the verb pattern and agreement are also faulty. The sentence about ages 26–30 and 31–50 is incomplete in structure. Work on complete clauses, passive forms such as “were spent,” and agreement between subjects and verbs; these corrections would make your varied sentence attempts more controlled.
