IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table gives us information of people of different ages using of internet by hour unit in Europe.
Around the age of 11-15 years, male toddlers are using internet on average of 8 hours whereas the female toddlers are using 6 hours on average. I would say in such a young age, this average can be a bit alarming.
Then the highest average hours of using internet comes from the age span of 16-20 years of teenagers. Male teenagers are using 19 hours on average and the females are close to that timing 18 hours on average. This is the peak time of entertainment, exploring and studying and everything. So a high average is expected but it could be bit less. Without any guidance, this much average can cause too much physical and mental hazards and can cause some severe aches.
From 21-25 years of young people, the male and female average usage drastically comes down to 7 hours and 5 hours consequently. They get employed and start families so this decrease was bound to be.
Around 26-30, their daily activities and responsibilities grow and for that their average internet usage comes down to 4 hours for both male and female.
Then the adulthood comes so the 31 to long 50 years of range, the men's usage of internet comes down to 3 hours on average and the women's remain 4. For the first time, women using more than the men.
Becoming senior citizen, at 51+, both of their average lessen 1 hour. Old generations are new to the internet so they can't connect to it for more hours.
As the internet is a new-gen thing, the newer generations' using average will always be high rather than the boomers and millennials. But, we should control this from such a young age so they won't get addicted to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You report the main pattern accurately: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds (19 hours for males and 18 for females), then falls across the older groups, and you note the equal figures at ages 26–30 and the female lead at 31–50. This gives the reader a useful account of the data. However, the response does not clearly distinguish the table’s descriptive purpose from your opinions. Comments such as “this average can be a bit alarming,” speculation about employment and family life, and advice about addiction are not supported by the table. The final claim about “newer generations” also generalises beyond the figures. A concise, neutral overview of the peak, overall decline, and small gender differences would make the reporting more complete and focused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the age groups in table order, so its progression is easy to follow, and paragraph breaks help separate stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Then,” “From 21–25,” and “Around 26–30” make the comparisons clear. However, the organisation is largely a list of age bands rather than a synthesis of the main patterns. The repeated “Then”/“Around” structure becomes mechanical, while commentary about health, employment, and older generations interrupts the data sequence. Some references are also unclear, as in “both of their average lessen 1 hour,” where the comparison is not precisely expressed. Grouping the figures into a peak-and-decline overview followed by key gender comparisons would create stronger cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary to describe the figures, including “average,” “peak,” “drastically comes down,” and “responsibilities.” The meaning is generally understandable, and terms such as “adulthood” and “senior citizen” show attempts to vary your wording. However, several choices are inaccurate or informal for an academic report: “male toddlers” and “female toddlers” mislabel teenagers, “comes from the age span” is an awkward collocation, and “physical and mental hazards” is imprecise. Phrases such as “new-gen thing” and “boomer” are also too conversational. Prefer neutral, precise expressions such as “male users,” “reaches a peak,” and “declines,” and avoid adding evaluative language that the table cannot support.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “whereas” and “so,” and most of the data remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “people of different ages using of internet” has an incorrect construction, while “the female toddlers are using 6 hours on average” uses an awkward tense pattern for a general table. In “both of their average lessen 1 hour,” the subject–verb agreement and sentence structure are faulty; “the women’s remain 4” also lacks a clear noun or verb construction. Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or misplaced. Use consistent present simple for table descriptions, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
