Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table explains average internet time spent by different age groups in Europe.

Overall, male and female aged between 16 and 20 have used internet more than any of the other groups. On the other hand, people aged 51+ rarely spent any time on internet compared to middle age people.

In the initial age groups males lead females by 1 and 2 in 16-20, 11-15, and 21-25 age groups respectively. However, the trened reversed through older age groups, as females started to lead by 1 in 31-51+ age group. age group between 26-30 is the only group where the numbers are equal.

Regardless of the gender using internet was less common during early teenagers but it reached its peak at around 20 for the people aged between 16 and 20. It again reduced throgh later age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main pattern: internet use peaks among 16–20-year-olds and is lowest among those aged 51 and over. You also note the equal figures for ages 26–30 and the shift to a female lead in older groups. However, the comparison is not fully accurate: males lead by 2 hours at ages 11–15, by 1 at 16–20, and by 2 at 21–25, rather than the sequence stated. The phrase “31–51+ age group” also combines separate categories. The overview is relevant, but the report gives limited detail on the figures and the claim that older people “rarely” use the internet is imprecise. The response is 13 words below the required minimum; develop the comparisons with accurate data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing comparisons and the general trend. This makes the main message easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less clear, though. “In the initial age groups” is followed by a confusing sequence of age groups and differences, while “the trend reversed through older age groups” does not specify the categories clearly. The final paragraph repeats the peak-and-decline pattern already given in the overview. To improve progression, group the figures into younger and older age ranges, state each comparison in order, and avoid repeating the same trend.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the table, including “average,” “age groups,” “peak,” “reduced,” and “lead,” so the topic remains clear. There is some attempt to vary expression, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a data report. “Rarely spent any time on internet” overstates the low figures, and “numbers” is less precise than “hours” or “figures.” Spelling errors such as “trened” and “throgh” are noticeable, and “middle age people” is not an accurate description of the age categories shown. Aim for precise, neutral reporting language and check spelling; this will make your comparisons clearer without requiring more complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “However” and a sentence with “Regardless of.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but grammatical errors recur. For example, “male and female aged” lacks a plural noun or determiner, and “have used internet more” uses an awkward tense for reporting table data. In “the trend reversed … as females started to lead,” the structure is understandable, but the following phrase “age group between 26-30 is” needs an article. The sentence beginning “Regardless of the gender using internet” is also awkwardly constructed. Use consistent present-tense reporting verbs, check articles and plural forms, and make sure each sentence has a clear subject.
