Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the table’s subject and include some relevant figures, notably the male and female peaks of 19 and 18 hours for ages 16–20. However, the response reports the data only minimally and does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main pattern across age groups. The statement that females account for “the largest figure” is misleading: males record the highest value overall, and the oldest group has the lowest values for both sexes. Some comparisons are also unclear or inaccurate, including the claim about “2 people” and the description of the 26–30 and 31–50 groups. The response is 25 words below the required minimum. To improve, summarise the overall age trend and compare the sexes using the table’s figures accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “finally” show an effort to guide the reader. However, progression is difficult to follow because the details are not grouped or compared consistently. For example, the paragraph beginning “Firtsly” moves from the oldest group to the youngest group’s peak without a clear organising principle, while the final paragraph repeats the comparison of ages 26–30. Linking words such as “while” and “whereas” are sometimes used without a clear contrast. A clearer structure would present the overview first, then compare the age groups in a logical order, using each paragraph to report related figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “age groups,” “largest figure,” “smallest amount” and “in contrast,” so the reader can recognise that it is describing numerical data. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “represented the most quantity” and “significant increased.” There are also spelling errors, including “Firtsly,” and repeated use of “people” where the table reports hours. Aim for precise data-reporting language and check spelling. For example, describe figures as “hours of internet use” and use verbs such as “peaked,” “fell” or “stood at” to report values naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to form both simple and linked sentences, including a contrast with “whereas,” but grammatical control is inconsistent and the range remains limited. Errors in sentence structure and agreement appear in examples such as “2 people has” and “Female accounted,” while the opening sentence, “The table compared about the European people spend,” does not form a clear grammatical pattern. Punctuation and capitalisation are also unreliable, particularly after full stops and around commas. These problems sometimes make the intended comparisons difficult to understand. Practise accurate sentence frames such as “The table shows that males aged 16–20 spent 19 hours online” and “For females, the figure was 18 hours.”
