IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the data on the average daily number of hours spent on online media for six different age groups of European people.
Overall, it is clear that both male and female teenagers spend the most hours of their day. In contrast, older citizens spend the least hours of their day.
At first glance, it is clear that younger people aged between 16 and 20 spent the most hours. Male teenagers waste 19 hours daily on digital multimedia. Even women of the same age do the same thing. They spend 18 hours daily on social media like TikTok and Facebook.
On the other hand, people of fifty-one plus always spent their whole day with their family members. It is hardly seen that they spend their day hours on social media. Older men do not spend too much time for scrolling on the internet; they only spend 2 hours, while women of the same age spend 3 hours on social media in a day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: the 16–20 group records the highest figures for both sexes, while people aged 51+ have the lowest. The specific values of 19 and 18 hours, and 2 and 3 hours, are also reported correctly. However, the overview is limited, and the response focuses almost entirely on these two age groups. It omits useful comparisons for the other four groups, including the decline after age 20 and the equal figures for men and women aged 26–30. Claims that older people spend their time with family, or that they use TikTok and Facebook, are not supported by the table. To strengthen the report, cover the full age pattern and avoid adding explanations or examples absent from the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs contrasting the youngest peak with the oldest group. Phrases such as “Overall,” “At first glance,” and “On the other hand” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, the progression is incomplete because the four middle age groups are not discussed, so the comparison does not develop across the table. Some linking is also mechanical or imprecise: “At first glance” does not introduce a distinct observation, and “On the other hand” suggests a contrast without clearly connecting the age groups. The reference in “They spend 18 hours” is understandable but could be more direct. Organise the body by age ranges and use comparisons to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “average,” “age groups,” “digital multimedia,” and “scrolling,” and the main figures remain understandable. However, several choices are informal, inaccurate, or unsupported for an academic data report. “Waste 19 hours” expresses judgement rather than neutral description, while “social media like TikTok and Facebook” narrows the table’s broader category of Internet use without evidence. “Spend their whole day with their family members” is also an invented explanation, and “older citizens” is less precise than an age-group label. Aim for neutral reporting verbs and accurate terms such as “spend time online” or “Internet use.” This would make the vocabulary more appropriate and precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the contrast in “while women of the same age spend 3 hours.” Most sentences communicate their basic meaning, and the figures are generally placed in clear sentence patterns. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. The past-tense forms “spent” and “did” are inconsistent with the present-tense “spend” used elsewhere to describe the table. In “people of fifty-one plus,” the age category is not expressed in a natural grammatical form; “people aged 51 and over” would be clearer. There are also awkward constructions such as “spend their whole day with their family members” and “spend too much time for scrolling.” Keep tense consistent and check prepositions and sentence patterns when describing durations and activities.
