IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The depicted table shows the data of the multiple age groups of European people that spend their time on internet .
Overall, the age group is classified into various sections and the gender is also separated as male and female. The age is divided into 6 categories from age 11 to age 51+.
According to the table it can be observed that it is slightly or un-noticiable difference between the spent time between male and female in almost all the age groups. From age 11-15 it is observed that males have average time of 8 hours whereas females have 6 hours but when it comes to age of 16-10 there is rapid increase in both .In males it 19 hours and females have 18 hours . Later it shows the decrease from the age 21-25 in both genders
From the next categories it is seen that there almost no difference in males and females as the time spend in the age of 16-30 remains same for both that is 4 hours each then from 31-51+ it is seen that females have slightly higher time spend than males .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern that internet use peaks among people aged 16–20 and then declines in older groups, and you compare male and female figures in several age bands. However, the account is only partly accurate and the overview is not sufficiently clear. The claim that there is “almost no difference” in nearly all groups overlooks the two-hour gaps for ages 11–15 and 21–25. There is also a significant age-label error: “16-10” should be 16–20. Later, you say the 16–30 group has four hours for each gender, although the table gives those figures only for ages 26–30; the 21–25 values are 7 and 5. State the main peak and overall decline accurately, then support them with correctly matched figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an introduction, a general statement, and a description of the figures. It also uses sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “According to the table,” and “Later,” which help signal movement through the age groups. However, progression is uneven: the final paragraph moves from ages 16–30 to 31–51+ without clearly separating the age bands, and the inaccurate grouping makes the comparison difficult to follow. Several ideas are joined in long sentences, especially the sentence beginning “From age 11-15,” while punctuation and spacing are inconsistent. Organise the body into clear comparisons—for example, younger groups and older groups—and use accurate references such as “this age band” to make links between sentences clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “average time,” “rapid increase,” “decrease,” and “slightly higher,” so the reader can understand the general subject and trends. However, the range is limited and several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “depicted table,” “spend their time on internet,” and “time spend.” Repetition of “age,” “time,” and “observed” also makes the description less fluent. Spelling and word-form errors, including “un-noticiable,” further reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional data-reporting language and vary verbs for trends, while ensuring that each phrase describes the figures precisely. For example, “internet use” is more natural than “time on internet,” and “rose” or “fell” can replace repeated references to an increase or decrease.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses basic comparison structures, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently. For example, “it is slightly or un-noticiable difference” lacks a grammatical subject and article, while “In males it 19 hours” is missing a verb. The sentence beginning “From the next categories” also contains unclear sentence construction, and “the time spend” uses an incorrect verb form. Punctuation is often missing around sentence boundaries, as in “both .In males,” which makes the text harder to read. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, verb forms, and punctuation. Shorter, accurate sentences would help communicate the comparisons more reliably.
