IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table illustrates the data of europeans of across various age groups who spent the average hours on internet.
At a glance, it is clear that the people of 16-20 age group spent significantly higher number of time, whereas the same figure for most elders age group recorded the lowest interest, as compared to other age groups. Meanwhile, people with age 26-30 had equal usage of internet.
Begining with 16-20 age group, they had the higher number of interest as 19 hours by males and 18 hours by females. Moreover, people of (11-15) years old used www moderately, as 8 hours by male and 6 hours by female. It is followed by 21-25 age group used internet by 7 hours by men and 5 hours by women.
Turning to the europeans having age (31-50) used internet about 7 hours by male and female collectively. Noticeably, the people of 26-30 age group spent equal number of time while using internet, as 4 hours by male and 4 hours by female. However, elders having age 51+ spent fewer time over internet, just 2 hours by male and 3 hours by females.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern: the 16–20 group has the highest figures for both sexes, while people aged 51+ have the lowest. Most reported values match the table, and you also note the equal figures for ages 26–30. However, the comparison for ages 31–50 is inaccurate: the table shows 3 hours for males and 4 for females, not 7 hours collectively. The overview is also partly unclear, particularly “lowest interest,” which does not precisely describe time spent online. To strengthen the response, report the key contrasts accurately and make the overview more complete—for example, note that usage generally falls after the 16–20 peak, with a small difference between sexes in most groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the age groups. Paragraphing helps separate the overview from the figures, and transitions such as “Begining with” and “Turning to” signal a change in focus. However, the progression is not fully controlled: the age groups are discussed in a somewhat uneven order, and the final paragraph returns to ages 31–50 and 26–30 after earlier groups without a clear organising principle. Some linking phrases are awkward or repetitive, including “It is followed by” and repeated “by male/by female” constructions. Grouping the figures systematically—for example, from youngest to oldest—and using clearer comparisons would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “age group,” “average hours,” “usage,” and “spent,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “At a glance” and “Noticeably.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “data of europeans of across,” “higher number of interest,” and “spent fewer time” do not express the intended meanings clearly. “www” is informal and unsuitable for an IELTS report, while “elders” is imprecise for an age category. Spelling and capitalisation errors, including “Begining” and “europeans,” also reduce control. Prefer precise, neutral terms such as “internet use” and “older people.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a sentence beginning “Although” is not present; most sentences are simple or joined with basic connectors. Several grammatical patterns are faulty, however. The opening phrase “The table illustrates the data of europeans of across” has an incorrect construction, and “the people of 16-20 age group” is missing an article and uses an awkward noun phrase. In “people of (11-15) years old used www moderately, as 8 hours by male,” the clause structure does not clearly connect the users with the figures. The sentence about ages 31–50 also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the group and its reported hours. Practise accurate comparative clauses and consistent subject–verb structures when describing data.
