IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table gives information about the average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given table provides data on the average hours European people spent using internet. The information is divided into different age groups of male and female subsequently. Overall, the age group of 16 to 20 is dominating all other age groups with significant numbers. On the contrarty, the age group of 51+ has the smalled portion, both in male and female category.
Looking at athe data available, it is without a doubt that the most prominent age group when talking time spend on internet is the 16 to 20 one. It is dominating all other groups with make being 19 and female being 18. 11 to 15 accounting for 14 and 21 to 25 being at 12 are racing for a close second position. Both of these groups are also the moderate users of the entire table.
Age group of 26 to 30 as well as 31 to 50 both are coming at 8 and 7 respectively. At the last, the least time spend on internet is by the older population of people 51+.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main pattern correctly: the 16–20 group records the highest figures, while people aged 51+ record the lowest. You also include several accurate comparisons, such as 19 male and 18 female hours for ages 16–20, and the combined totals of 14 and 12 for the 11–15 and 21–25 groups. However, the overview is limited, and some descriptions are unclear or unsupported: calling the two middle groups “racing for a close second position” does not explain that the 11–15 group is higher for both sexes. The figures for ages 26–30 and 31–50 are presented only as combined totals, so the male–female differences are missed. Report the table’s individual values more consistently and make the key comparisons explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the age groups. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Looking at the data” help signal movement between points. However, progression within the body is not always clear. The comparison that the 11–15 and 21–25 groups are “racing for a close second position” is difficult to follow, and “At the last” is an awkward transition into the final group. Some references, including “both of these groups,” require the reader to infer what is being compared. Use clearer sequencing and link each age group directly to its figures and comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “average hours,” “age groups,” “prominent,” and “least.” These choices make the topic clear, and there is an attempt to vary wording rather than simply repeat the table labels. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “dominating all other age groups,” “smalled portion,” and “moderate users.” Spelling errors such as “contrarty” and “athe” also reduce accuracy. Prefer precise, conventional language for reporting figures—for example, say that a group “recorded the highest average” rather than that it “dominated.” Check spelling and use “hours spent online” consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including an overview sentence beginning “Overall” and a longer sentence comparing the 11–15 and 21–25 groups. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical patterns are not controlled consistently. For example, “The information is divided into different age groups of male and female subsequently” has an unclear structure, while “with make being 19” and “the least time spend” contain errors in the construction and verb form. The sentence fragments “11 to 15 accounting for 14” and “At the last, the least time…” also weaken accuracy. Practise complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and use consistent past-tense reporting forms such as “recorded” or “spent.”
