Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the table’s subject and give one relevant overview: people aged 16–20 have the highest internet use. However, the response reports none of the figures and makes no comparisons between males and females or among the other age groups, so the main features are only minimally covered. The overview also says this group showed a “greater trend,” which is less precise than stating that it recorded the most hours. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, leaving too little space to summarise the data. To improve, include the peak values (19 hours for males and 18 for females), describe the general decline with age, and note relevant exceptions such as the equal figures for ages 26–30.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, understandable order: it first introduces what the table compares and then gives an overall observation. The use of “Overall” signals the second sentence’s function, so the reader can follow the limited message. However, there is no developed progression beyond these two statements, and the response lacks paragraphing or links that would organise a fuller summary of the data. For example, the overview could be followed by a paragraph comparing the younger age groups and another covering the older groups. Build a clear sequence from the main trend to supporting comparisons, using simple links such as “By contrast” or “Meanwhile” only where they clarify relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some appropriate task vocabulary, including “table,” “average time,” “age groups,” and “Overall,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “exhibited a greater trend,” but this collocation is unnatural and does not precisely describe a number of hours. “Spent on internet” and “people of other ages” are understandable but could be expressed more naturally and specifically. The short response offers little evidence of range or precise vocabulary for comparing data. Use terms such as “recorded,” “hours of internet use,” “the highest figure,” and “declined with age,” and name the male and female values when making comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response uses two complete sentences, including a comparative construction in “as compared to the people of other ages,” and the central meaning remains understandable. However, grammatical control is weakened by “male and female of different age groups,” where the plural noun is needed, and by missing articles in phrases such as “on internet” and “between age 16 and 20.” The sentence patterns are also limited, with little evidence of varied structures for reporting data. Practise accurate forms such as “males and females in different age groups” and “between the ages of 16 and 20.” Then add controlled comparison sentences, for example, “Males aged 16–20 spent 19 hours online, compared with 18 hours for females.”
