Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the information regarding the average time spent on the internet by the people of Europe who fall in 6 given age groups.

Overall, the table depicts six groups of people with minimum age of 11 years and maximum above 50 years. Within these groups, internet was used mostly by male as compared to females while looking at the hours combinely and along with that both sexes falling in the second group were spending more hours on internet as compared to the others.

To begin with the top mentioned group in the table which include age between 11-15 years, male internet users showed the data of 8 hours to be spent on internet. While females of the same age group, spent almost 6 hours on average. Moreover, people in the age group above 51 consume 2 and 3 hours by male and female respectively.

Furthermore, combining average hours that people of Europe spent on internet, data shows that males spent almost 43 hours by adding the hours of all age groups while females consumed the internet for 40 hours. The highest internet users were observed to fall in the 2nd group for both males and females falling in the age bracket between 16 to 20 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that the 16–20 age group records the highest figures for both sexes, and you include several accurate comparisons, such as 8 versus 6 hours for ages 11–15 and 2 versus 3 hours for the oldest group. The overview also notes that usage generally declines among older groups. However, the claim that males used the internet more overall is not supported by the table: the figures sum to 43 for males and 40 for females, but these are totals across different age groups, not a meaningful overall average. The overview would be clearer if it highlighted the peak and the broad decline, while the body reported the remaining age-group comparisons more systematically. Some relevant details are therefore less fully presented or interpreted than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help signal movement between points, and the reader can follow the main comparisons. However, the progression is not fully controlled: the final paragraph shifts from the oldest group to totals across all ages and then back to the peak group. The reference in “the top mentioned group” is also unclear, and “combining average hours” does not explain precisely what is being combined. Organise the body in a consistent order, for example by moving from the youngest to the oldest groups, and use explicit references to age ranges and figures to make the links between sentences more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “average time,” “age groups,” “age bracket,” and “highest.” These choices make the topic clear, and you attempt more formal wording. Some expressions, however, are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a table: “hours combinely,” “consume the internet,” and “the top mentioned group” do not convey the data idiomatically. “Internet users showed the data of 8 hours” is also an awkward way to report a figure. Prefer precise collocations such as “spent an average of eight hours online” and “the oldest age group.” Avoid repeating “spent” and “hours” by varying phrasing carefully, while keeping the meaning exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview clause beginning “while looking at…” and the sentence comparing the oldest group. The main information is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the top mentioned group … which include” has a singular–plural agreement problem, and “people … consume 2 and 3 hours by male and female” has an unclear sentence structure and verb pattern. In “females of the same age group, spent,” the comma is unnecessary, while “both sexes falling in the second group were spending” uses an awkward construction. Build more reliable sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Men aged 11–15 spent an average of eight hours online, compared with six hours for women.”
