Average hours spent on the Internet by European people of different age groups

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides details of the average time spent by people of different age groups on the internet in Europe. Overall, people spent more time on the internet in their younger ages and lesser time when they got older and teenagers within the ages of 16 and 20 spent the highest number of hours surfing the internet.

Adolescents between 11-15 years of age, male and female spent relatively around 8 and 9 hours respectively on the internet, the value rose significantly in teenagers around the ages of 16 and 20 who spent the highest hours browsing. The males spent arond 19 hours while the females spent almost the same time, about 18 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You introduce the table accurately and give a relevant overview: internet use is highest among 16–20-year-olds and generally lower in older groups. However, the response reports only the first two age bands, leaving the figures for ages 21–25, 26–30, 31–50 and 51+ unaddressed. It also misreports the 11–15 female figure as around 9 hours; the table shows 6, compared with 8 for males. The overview’s broad trend is useful, but the claim that use falls with age needs support from the omitted data. The response is 37 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its partial coverage. Include the remaining age groups and accurate comparisons to develop the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear basic structure: an introductory sentence and overview are followed by a paragraph giving figures for two age groups. The progression from the younger group to the 16–20 group is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “while” help signal relationships. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, the response ends before it can develop a complete account of the table, so the progression does not extend across all age groups. The second paragraph also repeats the idea that 16–20-year-olds have the highest usage, already stated in the overview. To strengthen organisation, group the remaining older age bands together and use comparisons to guide the reader through the full pattern.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “average time,” “age groups,” “highest number of hours” and “browsing.” These choices make the topic clear, and “rose significantly” attempts to describe a change between age bands. Some wording is less precise or natural: “spent more time … in their younger ages” is awkward, while “spent the highest hours” is not a natural collocation. “Surfing the internet” and “browsing” also repeat the same idea rather than adding precision. There is a spelling error in “arond,” and “relatively around” is redundant. Aim for concise, accurate expressions such as “hours spent online” and “usage peaked,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main meaning is generally clear. For example, the opening sentence identifies what the table presents, while the sentence beginning “The males spent…” uses a contrast between the two figures. Some grammatical issues remain. In “Adolescents between 11-15 years of age, male and female spent,” the subject construction is awkward and the age range would be clearer as “aged 11–15.” The phrase “in their younger ages” is also an unnatural grammatical pattern; use “when they were younger.” In the overview, “lesser time” does not fit naturally in this comparison. Review sentence construction and comparative forms, while continuing to use a mix of simple and complex sentences.
