Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the example of economic recession for the 'acceptance' view and skill acquisition for the 'improvement' view. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the link between 'solving problems' and 'resilience' could be expanded further to fully explore the implications. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion clearly states the writer's preference. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully elaborated with more specific detail or logical extension.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition to that', and 'To begin with' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical or slightly awkward transitions, such as 'who support the letter view give reasons are as under', which disrupts the flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety and precision of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'economic recession', 'resilience', and 'qualify for higher-paying position'. However, there are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'accept problem' (should be 'accept problems') and 'letter view' (should be 'latter view'). The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on accurate collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the former view', 'the economy'), subject-verb agreement issues ('other believes'), and punctuation errors (missing commas after introductory phrases). There are also minor spelling errors like 'untill' and 'foe'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent use of articles and verb forms.
