Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of workplace politics and the example of Abraham Lincoln. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of why people accept bad situations is a bit superficial, and the connection between the example of Lincoln and the prompt's focus on 'unsatisfactory jobs or shortage of money' could be more explicitly linked. The response covers all parts of the task, but the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and nuance to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In the end'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the progression of ideas feels slightly disjointed. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and sophisticated to improve the overall flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'circumstances', 'demotivated', and 'extraordinary talent'. However, there are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'unacapable', 'supress', 'employess', and 'persident'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider, more precise range of vocabulary to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with article usage ('a good money', 'a president'), subject-verb agreement ('employees started believing'), and punctuation (missing spaces after commas). Complex structures are attempted, but they often contain errors that detract from the overall accuracy. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
