Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that it is best to accept difficult situations, such as an unsatisfactory job or financial problems, while others argue that people should make an effort to improve these circumstances. I believe that trying to improve such situations is a better approach. This essay will discuss both views before explaining my opinion.

Those who support accepting situtations argue that it is often the most practical option. This is because many fear failure, many people have lack of education or have poor skills to be adequate candidate for the job. Some also argue, there are lack of opportunities available. The job market is currently saturated, it becomes very challenging to find a suitbale job. Financial responsibilities, do weigh a lot on them, which ultimately makes it taking risks difficult. Some also argue they value stabilty instead of uncertainty. A abrupt layoff from the job, may significantly increase the risk of financial issues.

On the other hand, many people believe that it is better to make an effort to improve difficult situations. This is because taking positive action can lead to a better quality of life and greater financial stability. For example, an individual who is dissatisfied with a low-paying job can develop new skills or gain additional qualifications, allowing them to secure a better-paid position. As a result, they can improve both their financial situation and their overall well-being.

In conclusion, although accepting difficult situations may provide stability and reduce uncertainty, I believe that people should make every reasonable effort to improve their circumstances. This approach not only offers greater opportunities for personal growth but also leads to a more rewarding and successful life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the argument for self-improvement. However, the first body paragraph could be strengthened by providing more specific examples or a more nuanced explanation of why people choose to accept bad situations, as the current points are somewhat repetitive. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reiterating the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the arguments for the opposing view are as fully developed as your own.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are some minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the comma splice in 'The job market is currently saturated, it becomes very challenging...' and the slightly awkward phrasing in the second paragraph. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial responsibilities', 'saturated', and 'uncertainty'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'have lack of education' (should be 'lack education') and 'adequate candidate' (should be 'an adequate candidate'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of collocations and idiomatic expressions would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'Some also argue, there are lack of opportunities' (missing 'that' and incorrect article usage) and 'A abrupt layoff' (should be 'An abrupt'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances of comma splices and unnecessary commas that disrupt the flow. To achieve a higher score, focus on reducing these frequent minor errors and increasing the variety of complex sentence structures used.
