Student answer (Band 7.5)
Differing opinions regarding the most optimal way to deal with an unsatisfactory circumstance circulate among two different groups. While some individuals believe that accepting the situation as is would be the best scenario, an opposing group asserts the need for improvement in order to make the situation more bearable. I agree with the latter as I believe in the importance of hard work whether we are in times of predicament or ease.
Working hard towards changing what we are dealt with can tremendously benefit one's position, improving it and turning it into a success. Although it may seem difficult for people to find a way out of the unfortunate circumstances they are given, they should remain resilient and focused with a clear objective of finding a way out. Moreover, these traits are key to becoming a mentally healthy and powerful individual, as they provide one with the mindset necessary to boost self-confidence and morale.
Conversely, others advocate that a person should simply accept a negative situation, not making any effort to alter it. This is a viewpoint that asserts the idea of surrendering to fate, allowing it to lead us through life and take it as it goes. The reason for the common occurrence of this view is because it is the safest option when facing an obstacle. Originating from human nature's philosophy of self preservation, this idea is embraced by the majority of individuals and for a valid reason. Additionally, it may be risky for one to attempt an escape depending on the situation at hand.
To conclude, I stand with the idea that people should work harder towards changing fate for the better. Negative circumstances should therefore be handled with a mindset that encourages one to work more efficiently towards making the change that can affect their life for the better.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of 'self-preservation' as a reason for accepting a situation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument for changing one's situation is quite general and lacks specific, concrete examples (e.g., a personal anecdote or a hypothetical scenario involving a career change). To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed illustrations to support your claims, as the current arguments remain at a somewhat abstract level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'Conversely', and 'Additionally', to link your sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the flow of your argument. To improve, ensure that the transition between the two viewpoints is even smoother and that the concluding paragraph synthesizes the arguments more deeply rather than just restating your position.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'predicament', 'resilient', 'self-preservation', and 'advocate' appropriately. This shows an attempt to use less common lexical items. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally precise. However, some phrases are slightly repetitive or could be more sophisticated. For example, 'make the situation more bearable' is clear but could be elevated. Continuing to incorporate more academic collocations and idiomatic expressions will help you move into the higher band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'While some individuals believe that...' and 'Although it may seem difficult for people to...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over your writing.
