Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that embracing uncomfortable circumstances such as being financially broke or undertaking an unsuitable work is a good thing. Critics to this notion advocate that, the best thing to do is to strive for improvement out of such situation. From my perspective, deciding on whichever approach to adopt is largely dependent on several factors like personality, location, and timing.

First, accepting a poor job for instance without making frantic efforts to seek better opportunities elsewhere may be due to certing reasons. Some groups of people are sadly not opportuned enough to have adequate information to search for better jobs with the hope of gaining higher salaries. For instance, an underemployed graduate with no savings living in a remote area may be ignorant of better job opportunites in the neighbouring towns, even though this requires some effort and financial investment to get he job I

However, it is a laudable call for people who are disatisfied with whatever conditions their facing to attempt several options in order to improve their living conditions. At times, this may involve taking the bold step to relocate from one place to another in search of greeener pastures. For example, graduates with poor jobs and salaries often embark on rural-urban migration to scout for better paid jobs. As a result, they end up changing their situation for the better.

In conclusion, it is unfortunate that lack of savings, information, and location usually limit people's ability to change their situation. But those who eventually take the bold step, end up becoming better overall. Hence, the choice to accept or ability to improve one's situation all comes down to the enbling factors that could make it possible or otherwise.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why people might accept a bad situation is slightly underdeveloped, focusing more on a lack of information rather than the psychological or structural reasons for resignation. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed examples and ensure that your reasoning is fully explored rather than just stated. The position is clear, but the depth of analysis could be improved to better support the arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. For example, the transition in the second paragraph regarding the 'underemployed graduate' could be smoother. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing, such as the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph ('get he job I'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'laudable call', 'greener pastures', and 'enabling factors'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'critics to this notion' (should be 'critics of'), 'not opportuned enough' (non-standard usage), and 'conditions their facing' (should be 'they are facing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure you are using words in their correct grammatical context. Expanding your range of less common lexical items would also help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'undertaking an unsuitable work' (article error), 'certing reasons' (spelling/word choice), and 'get he job I' (incomplete sentence). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors rarely impede overall meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor slips would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
