Student answer (Band 7.0)

People often face difficult circumstances in life, including financial problems or dissatisfaction with their jobs. While some believe that accepting such situations is the most practical approach, others argue that individuals should make every effort to improve their circumstances. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe striving for improvement is generally the better option.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people may choose to accept an unfavorable situation. In some cases, individuals have limited opportunities to change their circumstances due to factors such as age, education or economic conditions. For example, a person living in an area with high unemployment may find it difficult to secure a better job. Constantly worrying about problems that cannot be solved immediately may also lead to stress and disappointment. Therefore, accepting reality can help people maintain peace of mind and focus on making the best of their current situation.

On the other hand, many people believe that it is important to take action to improve difficult circumstances. Human progress largely depends on the desire to achieve a better quality of life. Individuals who are unhappy with their jobs can acquire new skills, pursue further education or seek better employment opportunities. Similarly, those experiencing financial difficulties may improve their situation through careful planning, hard work or entrepreneurship. By actively addressing problems rather than accepting them, people can increase their chances of success and personal satisfaction.

In my opinion, although accepting certain challenges may sometimes be necessary, people should generally strive to improve their circumstances whenever possible. A positive and proactive attitude not only helps individuals achieve their goals but also promotes personal growth and resilience.

In conclusion, while accepting a difficult situation can reduce stress and provide emotional stability, making efforts to improve one's circumstances is usually a more beneficial approach. Therefore, I believe that people should seek positive change rather than simply accept unfavorable conditions. accepting a difficult situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have discussed both perspectives—the merits of acceptance and the benefits of proactive improvement—and clearly stated your own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of economic conditions and skill acquisition. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the examples by providing a more specific hypothetical scenario or a real-world illustration, which would add even more depth to your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, facilitated by effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces your position. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'unfavorable situation', 'proactive attitude', and 'personal resilience' show a solid command of language. There is a sufficient range to convey your ideas with precision. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range. Overall, the vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'While' clauses and conditional-like structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is strong. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could aim for even greater complexity in your sentence construction and ensure that every sentence is perfectly polished, as there are very minor areas where the phrasing could be slightly more fluid.
