Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that accepting difficult circumstances, such as an unsatisfactory job or a lack of money, is the best approach, while others argue that people should make efforts to improve such situations. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that trying to improve a difficult situation is generally the better option.

On the one hand, accepting a bad situation can sometimes be beneficial. Some problems are beyond a person's immediate control, and trying to change them quickly may create additional stress. For example, if someone has an unsatisfactory job but cannot find another source of income, they may need to accept their current employment temporarily to maintain financial stability. As a result, accepting the situation can help people avoid unnecessary pressure while they gradually look for better opportunities.

On the other hand, many people believe that individuals should take action to improve their circumstances. This is because making an effort can help people achieve better living conditions and develop useful skills. For instance, a person with a low-paying job could learn new skills or obtain additional qualifications in order to apply for a better position. Consequently, they may increase their income and enjoy greater job satisfaction in the long term.

In conclusion, although accepting a difficult situation can sometimes reduce stress and provide temporary stability, I believe that people should make reasonable efforts to improve their circumstances whenever possible. Taking action is more likely to lead to better opportunities for the people and a more satisfying life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the example of learning new skills to improve job prospects. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, exploring the psychological impact of 'accepting' versus 'striving' in more depth would strengthen the argument. However, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas flow smoothly. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'Consequently' are used appropriately to link ideas. The progression of arguments is easy to follow, and paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two perspectives. The structure is coherent and supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses terms like 'unsatisfactory job', 'financial stability', and 'circumstances' accurately. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to an 8 or 9. The word choices are precise and natural, and there are no errors in spelling or collocation that impede meaning. It is a solid, functional performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, the use of conditional structures ('if someone has... they may need to...') and complex sentences with subordinate clauses is accurate. The grammar is highly controlled, with no noticeable errors in punctuation or syntax. The majority of sentences are error-free, reflecting a strong command of English grammar. While the range of structures is good, further variety in sentence beginnings or more advanced grammatical forms could push this into the highest band.
