Student answer (Band 6.0)

The human life has varying proportions of difficult and happy times. Many people unwillingly accept difficult situations such as unwanted job roles and financial crisis as their own fate. While other people are always keen to find a way that improves their conditions. I stand with the latter view and this essay discuss the same.

On the one hand, many unwanted situations do occur in people's lives. At first, majority of the individuals will try to emerge from these situations. But after experiencing failure in their first attempt, they are unwilling to try again. They will accept the situation as if it was in their fate and for their own good. For instance, due to competitive job market of today, many people are unable to find the jobs according to their qualifications and experiences. At last, due to financial and societal pressure such individuals end up taking unsatisfactory jobs which increases their stress.

On the other hand, there is other category of people who believe in trying hard to come out from bad situations. Most of these people will work on and improve their skills and talents. They may do it by learning the current needs of the world and accordingly adapting themselves to the needs. Moreover, being in a state of distress is a main cause of diseases such as depression and loneliness. A significant proportion of world population suffers from such diseases because they are helping themselves to come out such situations.

In conclusion, people should be modest while they are in difficult situations, and they should try hard and work more to eradicate such situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the negative health impacts of not improving one's situation is slightly confusingly phrased: 'A significant proportion of world population suffers from such diseases because they are helping themselves to come out such situations.' This logic is unclear and contradicts the point being made. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that your supporting examples are logically sound and fully explained rather than just stated. The conclusion is also quite brief and could have better summarised the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the idea of job market competition and the resulting stress is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this essay discuss the same', which should be 'this essay discusses the same'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unwillingly', 'qualifications', and 'eradicate'. However, there are some issues with collocation and word choice. For example, 'human life has varying proportions' is not a natural collocation, and 'helping themselves to come out such situations' is grammatically and lexically awkward. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate. Expanding your range of synonyms for common words like 'bad' or 'improve' will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'The human life' (should be 'Human life'), 'this essay discuss' (should be 'discusses'), and 'come out such situations' (missing a preposition, 'of'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to improve your grammatical accuracy.
