Student answer (Band 6.0)

While many people believe that accepting bad circumstances like an unsatisfactory employment or money shortages are the best, I believe people should try improving such situations, particularly because it will create more opportunities to grow in the future.

On the one hand, some people adapt to unsatisfactory situations because they think with time everything is going to be improved. As a result, people do jobs that do not excite them or do not put emphasis on improving skills to earn more money. Moreover, emotionally weak people fear to take up new challenges thinking they would not be able to face failure and consequently with time they adjust with the circumstances. For example, some students do not apply to larger corporations thinking they are less competitive and fear losing, so they give up initially even before trying to improve their weaknesses.

On the other hand, others believe in giving every bad situation a chance to improve by trying with potential fear of loss is required. Unless a person try to work on himself/herself over the circumstances, he/she would never not know of the areas that could be improved. This creates better opportunities to grow out of bad situations. For instance, a person who overspends can reduce his expenditure by being mindful of unnecessary spending on a daily basis if he wants to improve his situation. Therefore, the first step is to wanting to work on themselves to be better at handling and improving unsatisfactory events. Only then door of new opportunities will be opened.

In conclusion, even though accepting with bad situation is the best way to deal with mental peace, I believe, people should be opened to new challenges to improve circumstances that they are not satisfied with because only this way opportunities will flourish.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on career growth and financial management. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'emotionally weak people' is a bit of a generalization and lacks depth. While the position is consistent throughout, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reiterates the writer's stance, ensuring the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'accepting with bad situation' in the conclusion, which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'flourish' and 'mindful of unnecessary spending.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'accepting with bad situation' instead of 'accepting a bad situation' and 'never not know' which is a double negative. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and collocation to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage (e.g., 'Unless a person try to work on himself/herself,' 'the first step is to wanting to work'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure occasionally feels clunky due to these grammatical slips. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives.
