Student answer (Band 6.0)

While many people believe that accepting bad circumstances like an unsatisfactory employment or money shortages are the best, I believe people should try improving such situations, particularly because it will create more opportunities to grow in the future. On the one hand, some people adapt to unsatisfactory situations because they think with time everything is going to be improved. As a result, people do jobs that do not excite them or do not put emphasis on improving skills to earn more money. Moreover, emotionally weak people fear to take up new challenges thinking they would not be able to face failure and consequently with time they adjust with the circumstances. For example, some students do not apply to larger corporations thinking they are less competitive and fear losing, so they give up initially even before trying to improve their weaknesses. On the other hand, others believe in giving every bad situation a chance to improve by trying with potential fear of loss is required. Unless a person try to work on himself/herself over the circumstances, he/she would never not know of the areas that could be improved. This creates better opportunities to grow out of bad situations. For instance, a person who overspends can reduce his expenditure by being mindful of unnecessary spending on a daily basis if he wants to improve his situation. Therefore, the first step is to wanting to work on themselves to be better at handling and improving unsatisfactory events. Only then door of new opportunities will be opened. In conclusion, even though accepting bad situation is the best way to deal with mental peace, I believe, people should be opened to new challenges to improve circumstances that they are not satisfied with because only this way opportunities will flourish.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on career progression and financial management. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why people 'accept' bad situations is a bit repetitive, focusing heavily on fear. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the long-term consequences of both approaches. The conclusion is clear, but the overall development of the arguments could be more extensive to fully explore the implications of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'trying with potential fear of loss is required.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second body paragraph where the subject of the sentences shifts abruptly. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unsatisfactory employment,' 'expenditure,' and 'flourish.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'emotionally weak people' (which sounds unnatural) and 'the first step is to wanting to work.' There is also a tendency to repeat basic verbs. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'Unless a person try to work' (subject-verb agreement) and 'he/she would never not know' (double negative). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and sentence construction throughout. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense would be highly beneficial.
