IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Without any iota of doubt, good and bad situations are part of our lives. Few individuals think that it is good to adopt a horrible time, such as an insufficient job or lack of income, rest of argue that it is good to keep try and improve such situations. This essay will not only discuss both views but also give my opinion.

Apparently, accepting a difficult situation can sometimes be a sensible decision. To explain it more, people may have responsibilities such as supporting their families, and changing their job or financial situation may not be easy. For example, a person who has an unsatisfactory job may continue working there because it provides a stable income. In addition to it, accepting reality can reduce stress and prevent people from making risky decisions. Therefore, in some circumstances, accepting a bad situation can be practical.

On the other hand, I believe that people should try to improve their situations whenever possible. To justify it more, if someone is unhappy with their job, they can learn new skills, gain qualifications or search for better employment. Similarly, people who have financial problems can try to increase their income by finding additional work or developing useful skills. For instance, a young person with a low-paying job could take an online course and later apply for a better position. As a result, making an effort can lead to a better quality of life and greater satisfaction.

In my opinion, although accepting a difficult situation can sometimes be necessary, people should not simply give up on improving their lives.Taking reasonable steps to slove problems is usually more beneficial in the long term.

In conclusion, accepting a bad situation can provide stability and avoid unnecessary risks, but trying to improve one's circumstances can create better opportunities. Therefore, I believe people should make efforts to improve their situation when they have the opportunities to do so.

There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'adopt a horrible time' instead of 'endure a difficult situation' or 'accept a challenging period'. The range is adequate for the task, but the student relies on relatively common vocabulary. Incorporating more sophisticated, topic-specific collocations would help demonstrate a wider range and improve the overall lexical quality of the writing.
