Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this day and age, there is a considerable debate over making peace with predicaments, like financial hardship and toxic workplace. Some people advocate accepting the bad situation; conversely, others argue that effort should be made to overcome unfavorable circumstances. While it is important to acknowledge that both have compelling arguments, this essay agrees with the the latter view.

To commence with, the opponents of making any effort opine that they may lose their current job, which can further increase their stress. They argue that when people are in this condition the employers also want to get the maximum benefit out of them, and if they try to contradict with the employer, he may fire them to teach them a lesson. For instance, one of my friends was got fired, just for asking to raise his salary. Hence, making effort cannot be ideal for these people.

On the contrary, the proponents of fighting to make the circumstances better may improve the financial conditions as well as mental well-being of these people. When people themselves, according to this school of thought, try to make things better with a proper goal in mind and give their 100%, they may inevitably be mentally satisfied and may secure a better job. Furthermore, they cannot regret all their life for not making any effort and may get a long-term success. They substantiate their point of view by sharing the findings of some recent studies showing how the passionate people secure their career. Therefore, I, too, question the idea that individuals should accept their current predicaments.

To recapitulate, it is true that people may loose their current job by trying to improve their current circumstances. Nevertheless, no one can dispute the fact that trying to get better can ensure the psychological and financial well-being of people, so I assert that people should make efforts in order to get satisfied conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant, though some development is slightly superficial. For example, the argument regarding the fear of losing a job is clear, but the counter-argument could have been more deeply explored with more specific examples rather than a general reference to 'recent studies'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'On the contrary', and 'To recapitulate' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is minor repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'current job', 'current circumstances'). Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good collocations like 'financial hardship', 'toxic workplace', and 'unfavorable circumstances'. There are occasional inaccuracies, such as 'making peace with predicaments' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'loose' instead of 'lose'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning with precision, it lacks the sophisticated, idiomatic control required for a higher band. The student successfully uses topic-specific vocabulary, but more variety in academic phrasing would enhance the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'one of my friends was got fired' (passive voice error) and 'the the' (repetition). Additionally, 'contradict with the employer' is an incorrect collocation. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is present but inconsistent. Improving the accuracy of verb forms and removing redundant articles would significantly strengthen the grammatical quality of the writing.
