Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people strongly believe that it is a great idea to accept an unsatisfactory situation such as a bad work condition or bad financial stability, while others believe that people should strive to make their situations better. While both opinions have their positive and negative aspects, I strongly believe that everyone should try to do better in life and improve their current situation if it is not satisfactory.
There are some individuals who think that it is okay to have a bad situation, and there is no need to take measures to make your life better. It is possible for some people to feel this way, because they are afraid of taking risks in their lives. Someone who is already in their late 50s will not think of changing jobs, as they are not sure of finding a better one in this economy. Moreover, some people are lazy, and they do not bother to upskill themselves and get a pay raise.
On the other hand, some people have a view that human beings are capable of doing wonders, and they should challenge their capabilities to alter their condition if it is not satisfactory. It is believed that working a job which is not paying you enough to pay your bills creates fights and stress in your house as well, and people end up taking their frustration out at home on kids. Improving a bad situation and working hard to get a better life and control over money impacts your life in a positive way and helps to improve physical and mental health.
In conclusion, while some people have a view that there is no need to change a bad situation such as a toxic job or financial strain, I strongly agree that working towards making your life better is crucial and has a substantial value.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of risk aversion and the impact of financial stress on family dynamics. However, the development is somewhat limited; the explanation for why some people accept bad situations is a bit brief, and the argument for improvement could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but it lacks the depth of development required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. The progression of ideas is clear, but the transition between the two main body paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a higher level of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some good collocations like 'financial strain', 'toxic job', and 'upskill themselves'. However, there is a reliance on simpler phrasing in places, such as 'do better in life' or 'doing wonders'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more precise, sophisticated, or idiomatic vocabulary that would characterize a higher band score. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For instance, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is mostly accurate. However, there are minor slips, such as 'some people have a view that human beings are capable of doing wonders', which is slightly awkward. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures and ensure that even minor grammatical slips are minimized.
