IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Work satisfaction comes from finding purpose, loving what you do, and taking pride in your daily efforts. A number of people thinks that it is better to accept situations like unsatisfactory job or shortage of money, whereas a few believes that it is better to always try and to improve such situations. This essay intends to explore my inclination, however, it inclines with the later one.

On the one hand, people advocates that one should always try to improve the job situations as it is a saying that trying helps one to grow, learn new things, and build confidence. When someone always try, they avoid the heavy feeling of regret and gives themselves a real chance to succeed, even if progress happens slowly. Moreover, a person should always try to make oneself better to make sure that they are apt for the job and acquire all the benefits from it. However, it would also help in building skills, cuts regrets and would also improve their pay scale which would in return improve the confidence, work-life balance and will also motivate a person to do better in their work.

On the other hand, people advocates that it is much better to accept the situation such as unsatisfactory job or shortage of money as there is no reason to argue or to do something to make it better as they feels that humans have come to do work either it provides satisfaction to oneself or not. some of them feels it is the stepping stone for them or they had no other alternative and does the same job with no interest. Moreover, people believes that, they do not want to argue with the organization and prioritizing their emotional wellbeing, which is a good option for them as well.

In my opinion, it is clear that one should not work on a place if there is a lacking of job satisfaction as it would affect oneself emotionally, physically, psychologically and socially. Thus, our elderly generation also states that one should work on a place if one's will is there otherwise there is no benefit of putting your efforts in.

In conclusion, in the wake of above, it can be clearly, logically and easily concluded that although some people believes to accept every worse job situation, job satisfaction and appropriate salary is the most important aspect of job which should be met if a person is working in a healthy environment and one should always try to make it better.

Referencing is generally clear, though occasional clumsy transitions appear, such as 'in the wake of above'. Overall, the logical flow is maintained, resulting in a solid performance that fits the Band 6.5 or 7 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases like 'psychological and socially' and 'work-life balance'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'A number of people thinks' instead of 'think', 'inclines with the later one' instead of 'latter', and 'work on a place' instead of 'work in a place'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6, as the vocabulary lacks the precision and flexibility required for Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
