IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays it is prevalent in our daily lives that people believe that accepting bad situations, such as an unsatisfactoy job or shortage of money. While some critics argue that it is better to try and improve such situations. Although, both views have their own merit of importance. I believe that it is far better to try for better circumstances rather than staying in the same unsatisfactory situations.

Some believe that choosing a secure job and sticking to it is more safer than taking a risk. Most people stick to their usual jobs because the salary feels safer and the job is much more attractive on the outside. Individuals stay in the same company for years and years due to their dire circumstances, they have a family to take care of and usually survive hand to mouth desperate to make the ends meet. The constant unhappiness causes burn out and often leads to people having low morale and high stress levels. Moreover, the expectations of society often push an individual into staying in ban situations despite their lack of happiness. Students often opt for degrees that they are not interested in.

Others argue that it is better to struggle and strive for improved situations. It motivates a person to work hard and increases productivity where they are happy. If an employee is dissatisfied with their current role, they should be motivated to earn more qualifications and if he believes that he is qualified enough to start his own bussiness he should take the risk and choose improvement.For instance many current billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos took the risk once for improvement. Furthermore, staying and accepting less causes a lack of self respect.

Suffice to say, it seems safer to stay with a secure job due to shortage of money and financial issues but one should always look for ways to improve the bad situation at hand.
