Student answer (Band 6.0)

Several countries in the world are going through economic challenges. Some people think that it is best to accept a detrimental situation, such as a lack of funds or an unrewarding job; However, others contend that it is better to work hard to overcome such conditions. This essay will examine both these arguments.

Firstly, some people believe that hardships and difficult times are a part of life, and they should encourage themselves by accepting challenges. Nowadays, there are only a few jobs left which have handsome salaries, consequently, they have to take low paying jobs because there are no other options. For example, fresh graduates seeking jobs have only a few options in the market, and due to the family pressure, they accept these jobs by taking into account that one day they will get a better job. People are just leaving their luck on the God and believe that accepting the current challenge is a best way to move forward.

On the other hand, many individuals think that instead of relying on luck, they should work hard to cope with economic difficulties. Numerous people do extra work and overtime so they can improve their family's condition. For instance, many factory workers do overtime instead of an average 8-hour duty for increment in their salaries. They believe that only hard work can take them out of these challenges. They also motivate others by their routine, which ultimately affects other workers as well.

To summarize this, accepting a bad economic situation can be vital in the present but it is not a solution for longer period, and in my view, individuals should work more and try again and again to overcome these difficulties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the view that people should accept difficult situations and the view that they should strive to improve them. A clear position is stated in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as fresh graduates taking low-paying jobs and factory workers doing overtime. However, the introduction slightly misinterprets the prompt context by framing it around countries going through economic challenges rather than general life situations, though this does not severely detract from the overall task response. The ideas are reasonably well developed, placing this performance at Band 6.5 to 7.0, with Band 7 best reflecting the clear position and well-supported arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to the two contrasting views and concluding with the writer's personal stance. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'To summarize this' are used appropriately to structure the response. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. While referencing is generally clear, minor mechanical cohesion issues appear, such as the punctuation error in the introduction ('job; However, others'). Overall, the logical flow and clear paragraphing align well with Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common lexical items such as 'detrimental situation', 'unrewarding job', and 'economic difficulties'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'leaving their luck on the God' instead of 'leaving it in God's hands' or 'leaving things to chance', and 'for increment in their salaries' instead of 'to increase their salaries'. Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses and conditionals effectively. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'a best way' instead of 'the best way', 'leaving their luck on the God', and the semi-colon misuse in the introduction ('job; However, others'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the majority of sentences are constructed successfully. The variety of structures combined with minor control issues places this submission solidly at Band 6.
