Student answer (Band 6.5)
People often hold contrasting views regarding how to deal with difficult circumstances, such as financial hardship or job dissatisfaction. While some argue that accepting these situations brings emotional peace, I believe that striving to overcome and improve bad conditions is essential for personal growth and long-term well-being.
On the one hand, proponents of accepting negative circumstances emphasize the mental benefits of contentment and adaptability. Constantly resisting or stressing over an unavoidable situation can lead to chronic anxiety and frustration. For instance, someone facing a temporary economic slowdown or an unchallenging job might choose to focus on emotional stability and patience rather than constantly complaining. From this perspective, acceptance allows individuals to find gratitude in what they currently have and reduces unnecessary psychological pressure.
On the other hand, advocates for proactive change contend that self-improvement and progress are impossible without challenging the status quo. Tolerating an unsatisfactory job or poverty often traps individuals in a cycle of stagnation. For example, a professional who is unhappy with their low salary can learn new skills, gain certifications, or apply for better employment opportunities to raise their standard of living. Taking active steps to solve problems builds resilience, boosts confidence, and ultimately leads to a higher quality of life.
In conclusion, although accepting difficult situations can offer temporary relief from stress, I firmly believe that individuals should actively work to enhance their circumstances. Continuous effort and continuous self-development are the key drivers for achieving personal fulfillment and overcoming financial or career obstacles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on how to handle difficult situations and clearly stating the writer's own opinion in both the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported by logical examples, such as professional skills development and finding emotional stability. However, the response must be penalised under Task Achievement for failing to meet the minimum length requirement, as it contains 248 words instead of the required 250. This slight under-length prevents the development from reaching a fully comprehensive Band 7 level, anchoring the score at Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the two body paragraphs exploring contrasting views, and finally to a well-synthesized conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader effortlessly through the argument without mechanical or repetitive transitions, reflecting solid Band 7 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student displays an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Phrases like 'difficult circumstances', 'chronic anxiety', 'status quo', and 'cycle of stagnation' demonstrate an ability to use less common lexical items with appropriate collocations and style. Word choices are precise, and although the range is slightly restricted compared to higher bands, the vocabulary effectively communicates complex ideas without noticeable strain. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The text features a very good mix of complex and simple sentence structures, demonstrating flexibility and control. Examples include conditional and participial constructions such as 'Constantly resisting or stressing over an unavoidable situation can lead to...' and 'Taking active steps to solve problems builds resilience...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly. Control of grammar is strong, justifying a high band score due to the consistent accuracy across varied structures.
