Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on whether to accept a bad situation or try to improve it, while also offering a personal opinion. However, the treatment of the ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on why people accept unsatisfactory jobs relies on fragmented statements about a 'job crisis' and prices going up without providing fully explored examples or clear logical extensions. Furthermore, the position is not always clearly sustained throughout the text, resulting in a somewhat partial coverage of the task requirements. To move up, the writer needs to expand on their arguments with well-supported examples and ensure all parts of the prompt are given equal and thorough consideration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some overall organisation by attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear and smooth overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, with excessive reliance on repetitive conjunctions and run-on structures like 'and we need to' rather than sophisticated linking words. Paragraphing is also an issue, as the body section crams multiple distinct ideas into massive, undifferentiated blocks of text. To improve, the writer should use clearer paragraph breaks to separate the two opposing views and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the argument logically.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource displayed is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts. The vocabulary choice is quite repetitive, using terms like 'job', 'money', 'save', and 'business' frequently without much variation. There are also noticeable errors in word formation, spelling, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'unstablelities', 'prices up', 'job less', 'diffciult', and 'oppurtunity'. These issues prevent the message from being conveyed smoothly. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their active vocabulary, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and attempt less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are of a limited range, heavily leaning on simple or poorly connected clauses. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, characterized by run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation, missing subjects, and incorrect verb forms, such as in the sentence 'we have to see job crisis and unstablelities every things prices up even country wars with each others so petrol prices up people have no work to do'. Frequent errors in basic agreement, articles, and prepositions cause significant difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to practice forming accurate simple and complex sentences, monitor subject-verb agreement closely, and apply correct terminal punctuation instead of stringing clauses together with endless conjunctions.
