Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is ongoing debate about how to deal with a bad situation. Some individuals believe that accepting the bad situation is the best, such as an unsatisfactory job or financial problems, while others argue that it is better to do your best and improve such situations. I believe identifying the cause of the bad situation and learning from it can help to tackle the situation for future growth.

On the one hand, accepting the situation can be helpful. In life nothing is smooth, hard times happen in our daily life. Some people accept the situation and others do not. Rejecting bad situations can sometimes lead to unnecessary actions such as suicide and mental illnesses. However accepting the situation can help people to identify the problem and find solutions for it.

On the other hand,it is better to find solutions and change such situations. Hard times can be tackled if we work on solutions and try to improve it. For instance, if shortage of money is the problem, learning valuable skills for a better income can solve it. In my opinion, accepting the hard situation is the key step to understand for what is happening. In addition, working on solving the problems to find solutions also plays great role to thrive in such situation.

In conclusion, although bad situations are part of our life, accepting the situation is important to identify the problems that leads to a bad situation and working to find solutions for it can help to improve such situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both positions and give a clear overall view: accepting a difficult situation can help identify its cause, while taking action can improve it. The example of learning skills to increase income is relevant and helps explain the second view. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the discussion of acceptance is brief, and the claim that rejecting bad situations can lead to suicide or mental illness is broad and not explained or supported. Your own position also shifts slightly between acceptance as a first step and the need to act, without fully clarifying how these ideas work together. Explain the benefits and limits of each view, then state more precisely why you favour a balanced approach.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections between ideas are less clear, however. For example, “Rejecting bad situations can sometimes lead to unnecessary actions such as suicide and mental illnesses” is followed by a point about identifying problems, but the relationship between these claims is not fully explained. The conclusion also repeats the introduction rather than drawing together the two arguments. Use clearer links between cause, response, and outcome, and vary the transitions so the organisation feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “financial problems,” “valuable skills,” and “solutions.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “future growth.” However, several expressions are repetitive or imprecise: “bad situation” and “find solutions” recur, while “work on solutions” and “plays great role” are not natural collocations. “Unnecessary actions” is also too vague for the serious examples that follow. Choose more precise alternatives and check how words combine in English; this will make the argument clearer and show more flexible control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional example “if shortage of money is the problem, learning valuable skills … can solve it” and a concession in the conclusion beginning “although.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. For example, “On the other hand,it” needs a space after the comma, and “plays great role” is missing an article. In “the problems that leads to a bad situation,” the verb should agree with the plural noun “problems.” There are also awkward sentence constructions, such as “find solutions for it.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and punctuation, while continuing to practise longer sentences with clear clause relationships.
