IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that it is best to accept a bad situation, such as an unsatisfactory job or shortage of money. Others argue that it is better to try and improve such situations.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In my opinion, accepting a bad situation is worse, because when you can't enjoy the work and still want to do it you won't be able to grow in that, Unsatisfactory job and the shortage of money will only keep you in survival mode. I believe that doing the job of your interest which you like doing or what you enjoy the most I think you must move to that job that satisy you and your soul.

as per my experience it is best to do what you enjoy doing, (For Example) my Father asked me to enroll in LLB and I went to the Law Collage but my soul wasn't satisy I was bored all the time struggling with the studies, sylabus, and my interest was Technology, I was into tech things and computers, So I decided to quit that, and convinced my father that I'll be happy and and I can only in field which I like the most

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give a clear personal view that people should try to improve an unsatisfactory situation, and the account of leaving law studies for technology provides a relevant personal example. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the argument for accepting a bad situation is not explained. Your response focuses almost entirely on job satisfaction and does not meaningfully address the shortage of money or why someone might accept difficult circumstances. The example is also left unfinished, so its outcome and connection to your position are unclear. The response is below the required 250 words, which limits how fully you can develop the discussion. Explain both perspectives, state your position clearly, and support each main point with a developed reason or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Your ideas are connected in a basic sequence: you state your opinion, introduce your experience, and describe your decision to leave law studies. This gives the response some overall direction. However, it is presented as one continuous paragraph, with no clear separation between the discussion of the views and your example. The opening sentence contains several ideas joined together, and the example ends without a clear concluding point. Linking expressions such as “as per my experience” and “For Example” are used, but they do not create a complete progression through the task. Use separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion and supporting example, and conclusion; make each paragraph develop one main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “survival mode,” “interest,” “struggling,” and “technology,” and the reader can generally understand your main point. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated references to what you “enjoy” or “like.” Some word choices and spelling errors also reduce clarity, such as “satisy,” “Collage,” and “sylabus.” Phrases such as “my soul wasn't satisy” communicate a personal feeling but are not natural in this context. Build a wider set of expressions for employment, financial hardship and decision-making, and check spelling and collocations. More precise vocabulary would help you discuss both sides rather than relying mainly on personal preference.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to express connected and complex ideas, for example by using “because” to explain your opinion and “that” clauses to describe your preferred work. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts to combine several ideas often produce faulty sentences. In the opening, “when you can't enjoy the work and still want to do it you won't be able to grow in that” has unclear structure and punctuation. The final sentence, “I can only in field which I like the most,” is incomplete, while “I went to the Law Collage” and “I was bored all the time struggling” show problems with articles and sentence construction. Use shorter, complete sentences first, then practise joining them accurately with conjunctions and punctuation.
