Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often debated on how an individual should deal with a bad situation. Some individuals argue that it is better to accept a inconvenient situation and therefore barely take any actions, while others argue that trying to improve such situations is a better option. I agree with later individuals that it is always better to try improving a bad situation rather than accepting it.

Some individuals do not try their best to improve their situation and as a result they lean to accept a situation that is inconvenient for them. Although bad situations, such as toxic job environment or scarcity of money, have detrimental effects on the mental well-being, some people resist to change the situation simply because they want to lead a monotonous life. I disagree with this kind of mentality because it causes significant financial burden not only on a person but also on the future generations of that person. For instance, it is evident that the ancestors of most of the people, who are poor, did live their life in miserable condition.

On the other hand, despite requiring a great effort, there are people who are always trying to improve their current situation in order to lead a better life in future. By putting significant effort, people are trying to solve challenging situation, which would help them to foster a decent if not great life. I agree with this mentality as it helps people to get out of their current situation as well as it helps the future generations to lead a better life. For example, students, who belong to low-income communities, can improve their financial situation by studying dilligently so that they can utilize their knowledge to gain significant financial freedom which will benefit their decendants.

In conclusion, although it requires a substantial effort to improve an inconvenient and unfriendly situation, it helps people along with their decendants to faciliate a better life. Therefore, I completely agree that it is always better to try and improve a bad situation over accepting it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: you favour trying to improve a bad situation, and this view is maintained in the conclusion. The examples about students from low-income communities and the effects on future generations are relevant. However, the discussion of acceptance is less fully developed: the claim that people accept hardship because they want a “monotonous life” is not explained or supported, and the essay does not explore other reasons someone might accept a difficult situation. The examples also rely on broad claims rather than showing how the situations might be improved in practice. Develop each side more evenly and explain the reasoning behind your examples to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression. This organisation is effective, and the main position remains easy to identify. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “Although bad situations … have detrimental effects … some people resist to change” sets up a contrast that is not fully explained, and repeated references to “future generations” make the argument feel somewhat repetitive. Use referencing and transitions more flexibly, and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting example explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “mental well-being,” “financial burden,” “low-income communities,” and “financial freedom.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or unnatural, as in “accept a inconvenient situation,” “resist to change,” and “solve challenging situation.” There are also spelling errors in “dilligently,” “decendants,” and “faciliate.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Check common word partnerships and spelling, and choose more natural phrasing when expressing ideas about hardship and improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “because,” and “so that.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the argument remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. Examples include “a inconvenient situation,” where the article does not agree with the following vowel sound, and “people resist to change the situation,” where the verb pattern is incorrect. In “solve challenging situation,” the singular count noun needs an article or plural form. Some long sentences also contain several ideas, which makes their structure harder to control. Review articles, verb patterns, and countable nouns, and consider splitting longer sentences where needed.
