In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In different countries, the citizens are not recycling the amount of waste as they are supposed to and i think, it is because of the lack of motivation, public awarness or interest. However, by taking necessary steps and organasing social awarness campaigns can really help people to encourage even more to recycle rather than throwing out their wastes.

One major reason why people avoid recycling is that they are not fully aware of public awarness and the environmental pollutions caused by their habits. They often throw away their wstes into the environment without knowing how much damage it can cause to the nature. As a result, they often end up throwing their plastics, papers, glasses and other garbages without considering whether they can be reused. Another problem is the lack of convinient recycling facilities. In some areas, separate bins for different types of garbages are not available, making it harder for the residents to throw their wastes in designated bins. For example, in populated cities and crowded places, it is often difficult to find the separate bins where reusable disposals can be thrown.

There are several ways to address this problem. For example, the government should organise public awarness campaigns and events, where people can learn about environmental pollutions and get education about recycling as it plays a vital role in environment. Secondly, the children at schools should also be taught about this as, learning about the nature from very early age can teach them how to deal with their disposals and identify their contribution in nature. Furthermore, the authorities should provide separate bins in the residential areas so it becomes easier for the residents and the government should also introduce incetives and discounts for people who regularly recycle their wastes. This can encourage them even more to perticipate.

In conclusion, the lack of public awarness and waste management facilities are two major reasons why people can't recycle enough. I believe that, with public education, better waste collection systems and financial incentives could significantly change this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear position: low recycling is linked to limited awareness and inadequate facilities, while education, bins and incentives are proposed as remedies. The causes are supported with relevant explanation, such as residents lacking separate bins and people discarding materials without considering reuse. The solutions are also appropriate, particularly school education and financial incentives. To strengthen the response further, develop the effects or practical operation of some proposals: for instance, explain how incentives could be structured or why campaigns would change everyday behaviour. Some claims, such as the difficulty of finding bins in crowded cities, remain general rather than being supported with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents the main causes and direction of the response, followed by a paragraph on causes, one on solutions, and a concise conclusion. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For example,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the argument. The ideas within each paragraph are generally ordered logically, and the conclusion returns to the central points. To make the organisation more polished, avoid relying on a sequence of explicit connectors and strengthen links between related ideas. For example, the discussion of public awareness could lead more directly into the proposed campaigns, while the facilities problem could be connected explicitly to the recommendation for separate bins. This would make progression feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough topic-related vocabulary to explain the issue, including “recycling facilities,” “designated bins,” “financial incentives,” and “waste collection systems.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and there are attempts to use more formal language. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “public awarness,” “convinient,” “wstes,” and “environmental pollutions.” Some expressions are also awkward or repetitive, such as “throw their wastes” and “learn about environmental pollutions.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “raise public awareness,” “environmental pollution,” and “dispose of waste.” Greater precision would make the vocabulary more effective and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “why people avoid recycling” and “where people can learn,” as well as a conditional structure in “so it becomes easier.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the response attempts to connect causes and consequences. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening sentence has an awkward construction (“the citizens are not recycling the amount of waste as they are supposed to”), and the final sentence shifts into an incomplete or mismatched structure: “I believe that, with … could significantly change this.” There are also issues with articles and punctuation, such as “from very early age” and unnecessary commas after “I think” and “I believe that.” Review sentence completeness and article use while retaining the range of structures.
