In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recycling is a revolutionary invention of modern science which helps to increase potential efficacy in all walks of life. Though many countries have taken noticable steps towards recycling their rubbish, there are some countries which is not accustomed to this process as much as they should be. There can be many underlying reasons for that.

Firstly, I think inadequate financial budget plays a big role specially in developing or under developed countries. Recycling process demands resources and man power. Although many volunteer organisations come forward to help in this humanitarian cause, it is still not enough without the government taking proper steps. I have volunteered in many humanitarian causes but at the end of the day, it requires tremendous effort and funding to continue the process for a longer period.

Another reason can be lack of proper knowledge and information about recycling. Many people have a wrong idea about recycling rubbish, They are not familiar with the concept of recycling. For example, some people are not aware of the fact that plastics, papers, hair etc. can be recycled. As a result, they always treat these items and trash and never feel the need of recycling.

Several steps can be taken to resolve this particular problem. Government should take necessary steps to spread awareness about the importance of recycling rubbish. If people can gain enough knowledge about recycling, the mindset can definitely change from negative to an optimistic one. The government should also allocate certain amount of budget every year regarding recycling the rubbish. It also helps making the country more eco-friendly.

Luckily, I have been part of an awareness campaign emphasising on the effect of recycling and the consequences of not doing so. We distributed leaflets about the items which can be recycled. The response was really surprising and I am really hopeful about a future where recycling will be practiced regularly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the question: it identifies limited funding and insufficient public knowledge as reasons, then proposes government funding and awareness campaigns. The personal example of distributing leaflets also supports the proposed solution. These ideas are relevant, but some are less fully developed than others. For instance, the funding point focuses mainly on developing countries and volunteer organisations, without explaining in detail why recycling systems are costly or how that affects household participation. The claim that people may not know that “hair” can be recycled is also not explained or qualified. To strengthen the response, develop each cause with a clearer link to low recycling rates and explain how each proposed measure would address it in practice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining causes, and a final section presenting solutions and an example. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Another reason,” and “As a result” help readers follow the argument, and the personal campaign example fits the discussion of awareness. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, the links can feel mechanical, and the final paragraph combines government action with a personal anecdote without a fully clear transition between them. Some references, such as “this particular problem,” are broad. Use more varied linking and make the relationship between each example and the main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “inadequate financial budget,” “allocate,” “spread awareness,” and “eco-friendly.” It also attempts more formal expressions such as “underlying reasons” and “consequences,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. Examples include “revolutionary invention of modern science,” which does not fit recycling in this context, “increase potential efficacy,” and “treat these items and trash,” where the intended meaning is unclear. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “noticable” and “under developed.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Prefer natural topic collocations and check spelling and phrasing carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional sentence (“If people can gain enough knowledge…”) and clauses beginning with “Although” and “As a result.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “there are some countries which is not accustomed” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “Government should take” needs an article or plural form. In “It also helps making the country,” the verb pattern should be revised, while “items and trash” appears to need a different grammatical construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly the comma splice and capitalisation in “recycling rubbish, They are not familiar.” Review agreement, articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
