Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people do not recycle much of their waste in many countries. I agree with this statement because this significantly increases environmental problems. A truly sustainable strategy must be implemented on this.

It is the government's responsibility to make more rules for recycling waste material. When products are not recycled and go into the trash, they are disposed of, which can create several environmental issues, and it leads to the climate crisis. For instance, when the trash goes into a garbage site, it stays there for years; after years, it goes into the soil. It creates several health and climate issues.

The vast amount of production of these items costs billions of dollars. Whereas the more concentration on recycling and reuse, the less production will be needed. Furthermore, when every individual takes part in this recycling drive, it will lead towards sustainability. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 164 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you identify reasons for low recycling rates and suggest solutions, the arguments are underdeveloped and the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence. To improve, you must expand on your points with more detailed explanations and specific examples. The task requires a more comprehensive exploration of both parts of the prompt. Because the essay is significantly under-length, it is not possible to fully address all parts of the task as required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'For instance', but the transitions between ideas are sometimes mechanical. The final sentence is unfinished, which disrupts the logical flow of the conclusion. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that your ideas are fully developed before moving on to the next point. Using a wider variety of linking words would also help to improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on somewhat repetitive phrasing, such as 'environmental issues' and 'climate issues'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'vast amount of production'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to environmental science and policy, and focus on using words in their correct context. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repetition and express your ideas more clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'When government apply law' should be 'When the government applies laws'. There are also issues with article usage and sentence fragments. The incomplete final sentence is a significant grammatical error. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Practising the construction of complex sentences will help you demonstrate a wider range of grammatical structures, which is essential for achieving a higher band score.
