IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most countires, people do not recyle waste than they should.

I think it's lack of time and lack of awareness among people that limits them from recyling their waste. Creating appropriate awareness programmes and enforcing strict laws will create a sense of responsibility among people and the importance of recyling waste.

Most people because of long working hours, travelling a minimum of 3 hours everyday makes them tired at the end of the day and thus they prefer to throw things out rather than recyling them. Lack of time has also reduced childrens' activity to reuse waste materials for example cardboard. Most cardboard can be reused in a variety of ways like for craft work in school or using them in some art form or as a photo frame. Most shops recyle this waste by segregating them and using them to make paper bags or boxes. The uses of the same waste can be worked in various ways.

Creating an awareness through social media can have a greater impact encouraging people to recyle them. Banners, posters, advertisment can help create awareness. Government can also enforce strict rules if needed or penalties on societies who refuse to recyle them. This will not only prevent from throwing them away but also donating needy people like charitable trust for instance, clothes that can be donated or some that could be converted to bed spread.

Changing ones thinking perspective of recyling can help in a long way. In rural districts or places people recyle old clothes in making of rags or bed sheets or pillows.

In conclusion, having a clear picture of how to recycle waste can save a lot of unneccesary dumping and creating awareness of how to make the best out of waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for low recycling rates and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of long working hours and the role of social media in awareness. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For example, the suggestion to use social media is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of how it would practically change behavior. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a strong summary of the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each idea is supported with more specific detail or a clearer logical link to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices, such as 'for example' and 'in conclusion', but the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. Some transitions feel abrupt, particularly between the discussion of cardboard recycling and the broader point about social media. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'The uses of the same waste can be worked in various ways,' which lacks a clear connection to the preceding context. Improving the variety and precision of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'segregating' and 'perspective', which is positive. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'countires', 'recyle', 'advertisment', and 'unneccesary'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations related to environmental issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I think it's lack of time' (missing article), 'donating needy people' (missing preposition), and 'changing ones thinking' (missing apostrophe). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While the writer attempts complex sentences, these often contain errors that detract from the fluency of the writing. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammatical structures and ensuring consistent punctuation will help improve the score in this criterion.
