Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often said that earth does not belong to us; it belongs to the future generation. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the present generation to keep it safe and use its resources within the limits. However, it has commonly been observed that in many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could. In the upcoming paragraphs, light will be sed on why people do not recycle their rubbish. Also, pragmatic measures will be discussed in order to bring change in this behavior and attitude.

To start with, illiteracy is one of the major reasons. People do not have an idea that how much recycling of rubbish is important in order to keep the environment clean. For example, in the developing countries, where majority of people have no environment literacy, they throw their garbage on roads and streets. Therefore, there is nothing wrong in saying that people in many countries, do not recycle their rubbish because of illiteracy.

Going ahead, people believe that recycling trash is the job of janitors; resultantly, they feel embarrassed or mind even when they are asked to do the recycling of their own trash.

lastly, people are unaware of the severity of the situation. They have no clue that how much uncycled trash can cause damage to the environment. For example, throwing plastics and metals on public places release harmful chemicals, which are detrimental to human and marine life.

In the above mentioned paragraphs, reasons have been discussed. In the upcoming paragraphs, pragmatic measures will be discussed to bring change in this attitude.

Firstly, children must be taught in schools about recycling trash. For this, different dustbins must be placed not only in educational institutions but also in public places. Moreover, governments should play its role. schools in Japan can be quoted as an example where children are taught how to keep the environment safe and clean from an early change.

Secondly, educating people on recycling trash can be done through awareness campaigns. In Pakistan, Green Pakistan campaign was quite effective. Therefore, former president of the US has rightly said, "Education is the most effective tool which can be used to change the world". Lastly, penalties must be imposed on breaking laws regarding recycling trash.

In a nutshell, It can be stated that illiteracy, among the list of others, is that major reason why people don't recycle their trash . Hence, this behavior can be changed through awareness campaigns and penalties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task directly, exploring why people do not recycle as much as they could and proposing pragmatic measures to tackle this issue. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as mentioning developing countries and referencing schools in Japan and the Green Pakistan campaign. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or overlap, such as treating illiteracy and lack of awareness as separate points when they are conceptually similar in this context. Overall, all requirements of the prompt are covered sufficiently, placing this performance securely within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised, though some paragraphs are overly brief and repetitive in their transitional phrases, such as repeatedly writing 'In the upcoming paragraphs'. Cohesive devices are used, but some transitions feel mechanical or slightly awkward. Referencing is mostly clear, though logical progression falters slightly due to repetitive meta-commentary between paragraphs. Cohesion is generally adequate and well managed overall, aligning with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'pragmatic measures', 'illiteracy', 'detrimental', and 'penalties'. However, there are notable lexical and collocational errors throughout the text. For instance, 'light will be sed on' contains a misspelling and misuse of collocation (should be 'shed'), 'environment literacy' should be 'environmental literacy', and 'uncycled trash' is incorrect (should be 'unrecycled trash'). These word-choice and spelling errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, preposition usage, and awkward phrasing such as 'how much recycling of rubbish is important' and 'governments should play its role' (disagreement between plural 'governments' and singular 'its'). Punctuation also suffers from occasional spacing errors before commas and periods. While complex structures are attempted, they often introduce minor errors that occasionally require the reader to re-read, though communication is never severely impeded.
