Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is evident that across numerous countries, the amount of citizens that are making the decision to not recycle their waste as much as they can is increasing significantly. Following this there several reasons for this consequence and eventually the solutions to this problem.

The major compelling rationale for this view is the rapid paced lifestyle of today's generation, the tedious cycle of accomplishing multiple activities throughout the day, ranging from the long hours of school, college, universities to the exhausting corporate hours. These hours completely drain the energy of the people disenabling them from making deliberate sustainable choices.Another supporting notion is the increased usage of plastic due to its multi use properties for the mass production, for instance for packagaing of wide range of products, making it challenging for the people to recycle consistenly, this is particularly evident in daily use grocery items such as plastic bottles, plastic wrapping and packaging.

On the contrary, there are several techniques in which we can alter the situation for desired results, primarily enhancing the recycling campaigns by illustrating the hiking negative impacts on the environment to ensure increased awareness to each age group. Another vital strategy that can be adopted is imposing the regulations on the manufacturing companies to limit the use of the non biodegradable plastic and increase the use of recycled materials for their packaging. Many renowned skincare companies like L'oreal have started to incorporate recycled plastic for their shampoo bottles along with the recycling reminder on the back of the bottle.

To sum it up, although due to several underlaying causes that have resulted in people not recycling to the full potential such as the fast paced lifestyle which makes doing these minimal tasks feel like going the extra mile, along with the increased mass production of the products using plastics. Addtionally, strategies such as increased efforts to enhance recycling awareness and the increased use of sustainable material can be incorporated to overcome this challenge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining both the reasons behind low recycling rates and offering practical solutions. The student provides clear ideas, such as the fast-paced modern lifestyle draining citizens' energy and the heavy reliance on plastic packaging by manufacturers. These points are suitably extended with relevant examples, such as daily grocery items and skincare brands like L'oreal. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas in the body paragraphs could be slightly more fully developed to reach the highest bands, but overall, all requirements of the task are well met, matching the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are generally well structured, with distinct introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Following this', 'Another supporting notion', and 'On the contrary'. However, some of the referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the concluding sentence acting as a fragmented run-on summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately overall, but the flow between clauses occasionally falters, placing this securely at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and phrasal structures like 'compelling rationale', 'rapid paced lifestyle', and 'non biodegradable plastic'. There are, however, some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'disenabling them' instead of 'disabling', 'hiking negative impacts', and spelling errors like 'packagaing' and 'underlaying'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent grasp of sentence structures. There are several long, multi-clause sentences, particularly in the introduction and conclusion, which occasionally lead to grammatical strain and run-on structures (e.g., 'To sum it up, although due to several underlaying causes... Addtionally, strategies such as... can be incorporated...'). Minor punctuation and prepositional errors also occur. However, the errors do not impede overall communication, and there are frequent error-free segments within the body paragraphs. This warrants a Band 6.0.
