Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, in many countries human beings do not recycle their garbage as much as they could is becoming an increasingly important issue. Some people belive that it is wastage of time , While others argue that it affects the environment. This essay will discuss both views and explain my opinion.

Firstly, in big cities many throw their garbage in the dustbins which is good but they never recycle it. This is because they have their jobs and they have not too much time to do it . For example , if i talk about teachers then ladies get up and then they make their meal and go to school and come in evening . So that they have no time to recycle their garbage. As a result, they have no issue about what happen after they throw their garbage outside .

Secondly, many other have those problems. One important reason is that i spread also malaria and other diseases which is harmful for childrens as well as for old age people. For instance , i saw many people who throw the garbage outside and they burn it . DUe to burning its cause pollution and it is become a difficult to take breathe for old peoples who have asthma. Therefore, according to me government should take step regarding this and they establish machines in every area so that people thow their rubbish in machine as well as open recycle store depot so tha they recycle the plastic bottles and glasses over there.

In conclusion, i think it is also pupils responsibilty to take care the area where they live so that they away from dangerous diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt—explaining why people do not recycle as much as they could and suggesting solutions. However, the student misinterprets the prompt's core premise in the introduction by framing the issue as a debate between whether recycling is a 'wastage of time' versus affecting the environment, rather than directly answering the 'why' and 'what can be done' aspects required by the prompt. Ideas are presented, such as lack of time and busy schedules (e.g., 'teachers then ladies get up and then they make their meal'), but they are under-developed and rely on simplistic examples. The solutions mentioned, such as establishing machines and open recycling depots, are relevant but lack detailed explanation. Overall, the task is addressed partially, aligning with a Band 5 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at organisation with linking words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, the overall progression lacks clarity. Referencing is frequently unclear, particularly the pronoun usage ('One important reason is that i spread also malaria', where 'i' appears to mean 'it' or refer to rubbish inconsistently). Cohesive devices are mechanically applied and sometimes inaccurate. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs is disjointed, jumping abruptly between personal schedules, health issues, and solutions without smooth transitions. These issues reflect the characteristics of a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently revolving around simple terms like 'garbage', 'rubbish', 'throw', and 'time'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'wastage of time' instead of 'a waste of time', 'old age people' instead of 'elderly people', and 'take breathe' instead of 'breathe'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'environment' and 'pollution', but limited control and frequent errors in spelling and word formation restrict the score. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, meeting the criteria for Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences using conjunctions like 'because', 'if', and 'so that', these structures are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('prices is', 'childrens', 'peoples'), pronoun confusion ('i saw many people who throw the garbage outside and they burn it . DUe to burning its cause pollution'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also problematic, with spaces placed incorrectly before commas and full stops. Because frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader, the performance fits Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.
