In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, waste management has become a major global issue. Although recycling is a effective way to protect the environment, many individuals still do not recycle as much waste as they could. This essay will examine the main causes behind this problem and suggest practical solutions to solve it.

There are two primary reasons why people fail to recycle their household rubbish. Firstly, a lack of convenient recycling infrastructure makes the process difficult for residents. In many neighborhoods, there are no dedicated recycling bins or local sorting centers, which means people have to drive long distances to discard recyclable waste. As a result, most citizens choose to throw everything into regular trash bins out of convenience. Secondly, there is a lack of public awareness regarding how to sort waste correctly. Many consumers are unsure which plastic items or materials can be recycled, leading to confusion and lower participation rates.

To address these issues, both governments and communities must take action. The most effective solution is to improve municipal waste collection infrastructure. Governments should provide separate bins for plastic, paper, and organic waste directly outside households, making recycling as easy as throwing away standard rubbish. In addition, financial incentives can be introduced to encourage participation. For instance, governments can establish container-deposit schemes where citizens receive a small cash refund when returning plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Furthermore, educational campaigns in schools and media can help teach citizens how to sort their garbage properly.

In conclusion, insufficient infrastructure and a lack of clear knowledge are the main reasons why people do not recycle enough. However, by providing convenient recycling facilities and financial rewards, governments can successfully encourage the public to recycle more of their waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the prompt thoroughly and well. Both the reasons why people do not recycle as much as they could and the solutions to change this are fully addressed. For example, the student identifies clear causes such as a lack of convenient recycling infrastructure and public ignorance regarding sorting, and pairs them with direct, logical solutions like improving municipal waste collection and establishing container-deposit schemes. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning plastic, paper, and organic waste separation directly outside households. The position remains clear throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong, fully realized understanding of the task without any minor omissions or underdeveloped points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Ideas are logically sequenced, showing a smooth and clear progression from the introduction to the causes, solutions, and conclusion. All aspects of cohesion are well managed through the effective use of cohesive devices and clear referencing. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'To address these issues,' guide the reader effortlessly through the paragraphs. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme—the first body paragraph details the causes, while the second outlines actionable solutions. The overall structure is coherent and reads naturally, ensuring that information flows logically without any mechanical or faulty connections.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

The essay displays a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on waste management. The student skillfully uses uncommon lexical items such as 'municipal waste collection infrastructure,' 'container-deposit schemes,' and 'financial incentives' with a strong awareness of style and collocation. Word choice is generally precise, although there is a single minor error in the introduction ('an effective way' instead of 'a effective way', though this appears to be a minor slip given the otherwise strong control). The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings fluidly, reflecting a sophisticated command of language that accurately articulates complex environmental and governmental concepts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response demonstrates a wide range of complex grammatical structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring well-controlled subordinate clauses, conditional elements, and varied sentence beginnings such as 'Although recycling is...' and 'In many neighborhoods, there are no...'. Grammatical control is evident across verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions inside complex patterns (e.g., 'awareness regarding how to sort waste correctly'). Punctuation is handled accurately throughout. There are only very occasional minor slips, which do not detract from the overall high quality of the grammatical execution.
