IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

People don't take rubbish out for recycling that much beacuse the recycling bins are too far from the appartments building or housing colonies so people tend to throw garbage into nearest dumb truck or large bins which are placed out of their houses. This can be fixed if we place recylcing bin near the housing socities so people can easily reach out to it.

Recycling bins are placed in the specific areas like commercial markets or rest areas on the highway but it seemed rare in housing colonies or around appartment buildings whereas, a huge dumbster is placed that would carry all type of garbage and later it can dumped in soil or sea. As a huge dumster is easy to access and don't consume time, most of the people like to throw their garbage in it instead of taking it to the recycling bin. This saves time and they don't have to worry about categorising the garbage like glass, plastic and other rubbish.

To change that, recycling bins should be swaped by the huge dumbstar and a sign board must be placed on each bin like plastic, glass or other garbadge, to aware people about recycling and to throw the garbadge into the right bin. This would create a sense of responsibility and care for the environment. Secondally housing socities can host the green gatherings to aware families, specifically childern about the recycling and its importance.

In conclusion, people don't recycle their rubbish as they could because of false placement of recycle bin in citites so they have to drive a mile or two just to recyle their garbadge and this can be easily fixed if we replace a big dumbster by three recycling bins to make it more convenient for people to throw garbadge in it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by identifying reasons why people do not recycle, such as the distance to recycling facilities and convenience, and offers solutions like replacing large dumpsters with sorting bins. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the explanation of why dumpsters are preferred lacks depth and relies on repetitive points about saving time. The position is generally clear, but the ideas are not fully extended with detailed examples or elaboration, keeping the task response at this level. To reach higher bands, the writer would need to expand on the consequences of poor infrastructure and provide more fully supported, concrete examples from real-world contexts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay presents some organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The movement between ideas feels abrupt, and paragraphing is somewhat disorganized, with body paragraphs blending multiple concepts without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inadequate or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on simple conjunctions like 'so' and 'and'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the exact logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure a more logical progression of ideas from sentence to sentence and employ a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive devices to link paragraphs and arguments seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'categorising', 'infrastructure-related terms', and 'responsibility', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'beacuse', 'appartments', 'dumb truck', 'dumster', 'swaped', 'garbadge', 'Secondally', and 'childern'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the precision of the argument. To progress, the writer must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to spelling accuracy, and ensure that word choices accurately reflect the intended meanings in formal academic contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic compound forms. When the writer attempts complex sentences, they are often faulty, featuring errors in verb agreement, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'People don't take rubbish out for recycling that much beacuse...', 'recycling bins are placed in the specific areas...', and 'a huge dumbster is easy to access and don't consume time'. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are present throughout the text and can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with increased accuracy and better control over punctuation and agreement.
