IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.
Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Recycling rate is depressingly low in many countries around the world which is because of poor infrastructure and lack of awareness and motivation among citizens. If government take several initiatives, this issue can be resolved by placing colored recyclable trash bins in housing areas, highways or public places. The government and private NGO's can run a campaign to aware people about the recycling and how we can save environment while using it.
In many rural areas, the dumpster is placed outside the houses or in public places whereas recycling bins are at the specific area which is far from the housing schemes. Categorising the trash and drive miles to throw it into the recylcing bin discourages the citizen, as it takes alot of time and effort. Secondly most people get frustrated by looking at different colored bins and ultimately dump everything in one bin that contaminates everything, which disappoints public servants and eventually people stopped bothering about recycling.
To adress this situation, government and public sectors should work together to create awareness about recycling waste. Moreover a huge dumpster should be replaced by the three color coded bins with the labels on it to specify each bin, like plastic, glass or other waste. This would help people to understand what to dump in each bin without any stress. Lastly financial initiates should be given to each participants lfor example, getting a coupon at the end of month as a reward.
In conclsion, most people avoid to recycle their trash due to poor infrastructure and lack of awareness but government can cope this by swapping a regular dumpster by recyclable bins, awareness and tangible incentives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons for low recycling rates and offering practical solutions. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of poor infrastructure and public frustration in the second paragraph is quite clear, but the solutions in the third paragraph, such as financial initiatives and coupons, remain somewhat brief and could have been extended with more specific examples. The position is generally clear throughout, ensuring a solid completion of the prompt's requirements, though deeper elaboration on the proposed methods would push the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure ideas into logical paragraphs, each with a distinct focus ranging from causes to solutions and a conclusion. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transition markers like 'Secondly' and 'Lastly' are used, but referencing and logical flow can feel slightly disjointed, such as the transition into the second paragraph. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the management of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility and smoothness needed for higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'contaminates', and 'incentives'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede communication, such as 'recylcing', 'adress', 'initiates' instead of initiatives, and 'participants lfor example'. Collocations and word forms are occasionally imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'avoid to recycle' instead of 'avoid recycling'. These limitations keep the lexical score at this specific level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If government take several initiatives, this issue can be resolved...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('If government take', 'people stopped bothering'), article omissions ('the recycling', 'save environment'), and preposition usage. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument despite the presence of recurring grammatical slips.
