Student answer (Band 6.0)

In so many countries of the world especially the underdeveloped and developing countries, land pollution is one of the major problems they are encountering, and this is because trash are not adequately recycled. This eassy will explain the reasons this is so, and what can be done to cube this menace in our society.

Recycling of rubbish is taken with levity, especially in a country like Nigeria because, there is no law enforcing it on people, hence they see is more has a choice than a responsibility. Additionally, insufficient recycle bins, truck e t c makes recycling of trash difficult. For examples rubbish in a populated state like Lagos State has being reduced to minimal. This is due to the purchase of about 50 recycle trucks to the masses.

To change this, the government can create laws in favour of recycling and enforce it so that its citizens can obey. For instance, in Lagos state every last Saturday of the month is for sanitation hence no movement. if caught a fine of 50000 naira is to be paid this has reduced land pollution to about 40%. Further more sufficient recycle vessels in form of trucks, bins etc. should be put in designated locations to make recycling of trash easier.

In conclusion, recycling is taken with levity because it was not enforced and recycle materials are not provided. People will pay more attention to recycling of trash if laws are created and enforced. Additionally facilities needed should be put in place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it identifies weak enforcement and a shortage of recycling facilities as reasons, then proposes laws, fines, and more bins and trucks. The Nigeria and Lagos examples make the discussion relevant, and the conclusion restates the main proposals. However, some points are less fully explained than others. For example, the claim that people regard recycling as a choice is not explored, and the link between the Lagos sanitation rule and increased recycling is unclear. The statement that pollution fell by “about 40%” would be more convincing if its basis were explained. Develop each cause and solution with a clearer explanation of how it affects recycling.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on solutions, and a conclusion. The progression from problems to remedies is easy to follow, and connectors such as “Additionally,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of more flexible progression. However, linking is occasionally mechanical, and punctuation sometimes obscures the relationship between ideas—for example, the long sentence beginning “For instance, in Lagos state” combines the sanitation rule, the fine, and the claimed reduction without clear separation. Use shorter sentences where needed and make references such as “this” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “land pollution,” “enforcing,” “designated locations,” and “sanitation,” and the reader can generally understand your meaning. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “taken with levity” and “this menace,” but these are not natural in this context; “taken lightly” and “problem” would be more idiomatic. Other noticeable choices include “recycle vessels” and “to the masses,” which make the intended meaning less precise. Spelling and word-form errors such as “eassy” and “recycle materials” also affect accuracy. Build a more reliable range of collocations for discussing waste management and use precise terms consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect construction with “because” and a conditional phrase, “if caught.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to process. Examples include “trash are,” “they see is more,” and “has being reduced”; these should be revised to “trash is,” “they see it more,” and “has been reduced.” The sentence beginning “if caught a fine…” is also a fragment, while the final Lagos example needs clearer punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building complete sentences before adding several ideas together.
