IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days recycling become a common phenomenon. In certain nations, individuals do not recycle the items, which they are required to do. This essay aims to explore a reason and a possible solution to change this behaviour in society.

One of the significant reasons is a lack of environmental awareness. This is largely because some people do not have proper guidance of which items go for recycle and also they do not understand the long-term effects of waste. They put recycable materials in general rubbish bins. As a result, more waste ends up in landfills, which effect an ecosystem adversely. For example, plastic bottles and paper are thrown away instead of being separated or . Therefore, a lack of awareness contributes to low recycling rates.

A possible reason to mitigate this issue is that the government should make recycling easier and raise awareness. This is beacuse people are more likely to recycle when the process is simple. They can also provide clearly labelled bins and regular collection services so that people enhace their knowledge. Consequently, more recyclable materials can be collected and reused. For instance, local councils could place separate recycling bins in residential areas and fix a special pickup day every week. Hence, these measures would help increase recycling rates.

What we have discussed above, it can be concluded that one of the possible reason of failing to do the proper recycling is an awarness and this issue can be resolved by aware society and provide better facilities of bins in every house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you identify limited environmental awareness as a reason and propose easier recycling facilities and public awareness as solutions. The examples of labelled bins and weekly collection make the proposed action relevant. However, the explanation of why people lack awareness is brief, and the link between providing bins and improving knowledge is not fully clear. The response also presents only one main cause and one broad solution, so some ideas are less developed than others. To strengthen the response, explain more specifically what prevents people from recycling—for example, confusing local rules or inconvenient collection—and show how each proposed measure would address that barrier.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the cause and solution, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For example,” and “Consequently” help show relationships. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and a consistent focus. However, several transitions feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “Therefore,” “Hence,” and “Consequently.” The final sentence also begins awkwardly with “What we have discussed above,” which weakens the connection to the preceding discussion. Use a wider range of natural links and make references between ideas more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “environmental awareness,” “landfills,” “recyclable materials,” and “collection services,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “mitigate this issue.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “recycable,” “beacuse,” “enhace,” and “awarness” are misspelled, while “a reason to mitigate this issue” uses “reason” where the intended meaning is a solution. Some phrases are also unnatural, including “items, which they are required to do” and “aware society.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing collocations that express the intended meaning directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “landfills, which effect an ecosystem adversely” and a conditional structure in “people are more likely to recycle when the process is simple.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “recycling become” needs subject–verb agreement, “This is because” requires a different verb form from “This is beacuse,” and the conclusion has an incomplete opening construction: “What we have discussed above, it can be concluded…” The final sentence also has agreement and structure problems in “one of the possible reason” and “resolved by aware society and provide.” Practise accurate verb forms, sentence openings, and parallel structures.
