IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could.

Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is stated that it is not common to recycle litter to maximum extent in many parts of the world. In my opinion, lack of awareness and technology are the causes leading to this condition. The stated situation can be replaced by initiating environmental awareness compaigns, developing appropriate machinery, and introducing rules and fines on garbage collection.

There are many reasons for lack of desire to recycle rubbish in proper way. First reason can be lack of knowledge about 3R strategy that is reduce, reuse, and recycle. In many areas, education is not available easily. Adults have not enough information about which material can be recycled. The masses in those places do not know the procedure of recycling. Moreover, governments of many countries has no policies related to recycling. Moreover, third world countries do not have advance technology to handle garbage produced by large population. A research, held by California National Resource Agency, stated that countries in South Asia produce 10 million tons of garbage and those countries have not any official procedure and rules for recycling and litter collection.

A wide range of measures can be taken to change this. First solution that should be taken is initiating awareness compaigns. It will create awareness among people on proper disposal of trash. Government should allocate budget for developing proper infrastructure for recycling. Appropriate policies should be introduced. People should throw litter in proper manner. Heavy fines should be induced on faul method of dispsal.

In the conclusion, citizens do not recycle their garbage as much as they could due to lack of awareness and technology. This situation can be changed by initiating environmental awareness compaigns, developing appropriate machinery, and introducing rules and fines on garbage collection.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions and gives a clear explanation: limited knowledge of recycling and inadequate technology are identified as causes, while awareness campaigns, infrastructure, policies and fines are proposed as solutions. The South Asian example is relevant, and the conclusion restates the main position. However, several points are asserted rather than explained. For instance, the discussion of the 3R strategy does not show how unfamiliarity specifically prevents recycling, and the proposed fines are not linked to how they would be enforced or improve collection. The technology point is also broad, with little detail about what equipment or systems are needed. Develop each main idea with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation or a specific example to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall structure, moving from an introduction to causes, solutions and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish the two main parts of the question, and signposts such as “First” and “Moreover” make the sequence easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical: “Moreover” is repeated in the causes paragraph, and the solutions paragraph presents several recommendations as a list without showing how they relate to one another. Some references are also unclear, as in “The stated situation,” which could refer more directly to low recycling rates. Use a wider range of linking expressions and connect each solution explicitly to a cause—for example, explain that education addresses limited knowledge and infrastructure addresses technological barriers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “3R strategy,” “infrastructure,” “policies,” “garbage” and “disposal.” These choices make the subject clear, and the writer attempts more formal phrasing. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the writing less natural. Examples include “recycle litter to maximum extent,” “faul method of dispsal,” and “fines should be induced”; “campaigns” is also misspelled as “compaigns.” Some expressions, such as “proper way” and “appropriate machinery,” are vague or repetitive. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “recycle household waste,” “impose fines,” and “waste-processing equipment,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most ideas remain understandable. The opening uses a subordinate clause effectively, and the response attempts longer structures such as “Adults have not enough information about which material can be recycled.” However, some grammatical errors persist. For example, “governments of many countries has” has subject–verb disagreement, while “Adults have not enough information” uses an unnatural construction and “which material” does not agree with the plural meaning. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention in phrases such as “in proper way” and “First solution that should be taken.” Practise checking agreement, countable nouns and article use, and revise longer sentences to ensure their clauses are grammatically complete.
